My bad luck with a rear hub
My bad luck with a rear hub
When I put on my Sprint/AGX suspension last week, somehow I managed to get one of the studs stripped and the lug nut seized onto the stud. This is probably beause I was too cheap and reused a crossthreaded nut from before after someone who mounted my tires screwed it up.
So today I spent a few hours drilling and drilling and drilling. I wasted $15 at Home Depot on a titanium drill bit cause I was trying to drill out the stud itself. Bad idea, the stud is absolutely hard. So instead I took smaller bits and drilled a series of holes thru the lug nuts. Eventually I was able to join 2 of the small holes I had made in the lug nut, stuff a large flat head screw driver in there and then pryed. The lug nut split apart and the wheel finally came off. I then removed the brakes and then the rotor and then the stripped stud just came right out. Much to my dismay, the stud had indeed stripped all of the splines off of the rear hub. Great. This means I gotta get a new hub. I may just use 4 studs for the time being as its in the rear of the car and 4 is still plenty to hold up the car. I wonder if this is a "dealer only" item. Grr.. more money to spend on repairs.
I gotta quiet down my brakes and also hack 1 dead coil off my rear springs. The rear sits too high and its driving me crazy.
