of course us 3rd gen guys would say get the 3g, cause everyone in their right mind knows thay look much better than the 4th gens, but consider the factors....
a 92 VE with 130k and possible VTC problems(add on anohter ~$1k)...or a 4th gen with 100k miles and a relatively clean track record
I love 3rd gens but seriously.....

The 96 is a white egg, but it runs as new. All fwy miles used to commute to SF. 1st owner but it's 3k over the '92.
I need to decide today! I'm tired of being carless!!!!

if its an auto I'd go with the '96!!! if speed is your thing they seem to be a few tenths faster than the auto VE...mid/high 15's compared to low 16's) probably becasue of age, but if its an auto go for the '96! but I have to agree the 3g will look much better!

Actually the VTC's are not much to fix, if you DIY. And they do help a bunch, the VE has mad top end compared to the VQ. And dont just look at the factors, look at the car in general. Of course you will be told by the 4th gen owners to get the 96, but that is because they hate on the 3rd gen. And the majority of the owners have 4th gens. But think of this...Nissan was on the verge of bankruptcy when they were building the 4th gens, they made them cheap, to climb out of there pit. They have returned to VTC on the newer Maxima's and have skimped much less. 92 SE: Independent Rear, STOCK front sway bar, and rear sway bar, VLSD, pretty much variable everything, trust me, they stopped building the 3rd gen, because it costs soo much to build.

VE= engine code for the 92-94 SEs
DIY= do it yourslef
....not too sure about the VTC repair being the "average" do it yourslef job though! unless your are Jeff92se's illegitimate child! :luagh:

Ok. Going for the 92SE. The guy just spent $2400 on a new tranny and axles. Hopefully I won't have any VTC problems. Maybe I'll move up to the 97+ models later.
Besides I work for HP and the company is real shaky about now, so I'll pocket the 3k+ I'll save from avoiding the '96.
Thanks to all for your input.

Actually here is a little inside. But, it was due to the 3rd gen VE beind soooooo expensive to make. In 96 everything went downhill loss of sales, etc...(Due to them getting rid of the 3rd gen). But the altima sort of kept them alive. Then in 99 Carlos Gohsn came in the picture, and renault loaned Nissan $5 billion dollars, renault helped them, because they are a master and money management. This is what led to the newer better Max's we see now 2k+, but they still dont have the stuff the 3rd gen did, the 3rd gen is waaaaaaaay ahead of its time, trust me

The 4th gen has front and rear sway bars. STOCK. The aftermarket ones are just way beefier.
3rd gens are way better built, have VLSD, VTCs (well, when they don't tick) I concede that. Nissan skimped with the 4th gen, but they still kept the heart of the 4DSC in it, too. The 4th gen is definitely worthy of the Maxima name.
The VQ motor is amazing. Makes you forgive the other faults or grievances. Hey, I even like my beam I feel great when I blow by alot of cars that have an independent rears, but don't have all the goods to get past my VQ. If I've lost a race, I never come out wondering, damn beam!

Here is the rear of a 95-96 maxima:
VS.
The ALMIGHTLY 3rd gen:
The fact is that with clear/reds the 95-96 rear can look beautiful. I don't mean to hurt you 3rd genner's feelings but I can't let this smack talk go on..I have to put my foot down.
Now it's time for all the 3rd gens to go get some paxil, admit your denial, and go get yourself some real VQ power

Jeffrey, you are right in that fact..but they kept dissin the 4th gens so I had to rub it in even more...I will admit that with orange/red's and the stock 4x4 with certain rims/emblems the 95-96 can look rather ugly, but by the same token a 4th gen max has the right curves and features to make for a beautiful car with the right mods.
We used to have a '92-'94 maxima in the family..then got rid of it for a 1995 GXE in december of '94 the change in power, room, looks, technology....hmm I'll just stop here

Take a look at Jim's sig pic. Need we say more folk!?
Looks?
Room ? What?
Technology? Uh, what technology?? Like varible cam timing and varible volume intake manifolds? (like the 3.5vqs?) At least you guys have aluminum blocks. Should be great for boost! *nudge* hehe

Both are nice. Still though, if you going to get one, don't get an auto.
I like the looks of the 4th gen. more and not because I have one. The 3rd gen. is too boxy IMO.
To be fair and honest, I don't think any gen. Maximas look very good. However, looks aren't that important. If it was, I think most of us wouldn't choose a Maxima in the first place right?
