has anybody heard of Kumho tires?

Yes...
I ran Kumho V700 Victoracers for autocrossing for the past couple seasons on my last car. Those were really good tires for the money. I would imagine you're talking about the ECSTA 712 street tires though with this post. I don't know of anyone personally who has tried them, but I do know a little about them. They're a relatively hard compound (300 treadwear I believe) which means they won't be optimum for corner carving or launching at the drag strip. It does mean that they should last a long time though. The tread design also looks as though it would dissipate water well, making them a competent rain tire. The price is low for the reason you cited - nobody's heard of Kumho. I think they're keeping their prices low to get attention and try to grab some market share. I would suspect that prices will rise once they get some name recognition.

Re: Yes...
I got the Kuhmo Escstas. I don't auto-x or drive that aggressively and they were the cheapest tires in 225/40/18. I think they were 125 each at tirerack. I haven't had any problems yet, but they've only been on for like 800 miles.
