Yeah, and I have to clean out the TB. I'm sure it's pretty bad in there.

Strange. Well I'm going to do a ton of regular maint. stuff before I dyno again, or mod.

Belts
Plugs
Fuel filter
Clean TB
etc.

timing mod

remove the silencer. helps even with the stock air box

hmm...bryan, did your VE ever have a situation where around redline, the lights would dim? mine does it...i thought it would've changed when i installed a new belt, but its just the same...alternator?

I haven't seen a 5spd but I've seen a "baaically" stock auto(except for 2.5" catback)...Hojo put down 127hp in his so you know the 5spd is probably in the mid/upper 130s if not 140s I guess!

sounds like the belt is slipping on the alternator causing high end power loss IE: lights going dim or flashing

might try tightening the belt or just putting a new alternator on.

Not to sound like an a$$ nor am I trying to start another VE vs VQ thread, but I have still yet to see this "mad" topend power of the VE. All I'm seeing here is that the VE peaks at 5700rpms vs the VQ's 5400 peak. Everyone with a VE proclaims this motor pulls hard to redline (6500). What I'm seeing here is a motor that only pulls to 5700 and then starts to fall quite dramatically after 6000.

BTW, don't tell me that adding a Y-pipe/intake/exhaust/etc will increase peak power rpm because it doesn't. The only way to increase peak power rpm is to rework the intake manifold/cam/heads.

I guess you would have to drive one to see what everyone is talking about. I quote Brian V on this, he drives a 97 SE 5 speed with every mod possible and a S/C. He drove the bone stock VE 5 speed. "Man this thing has mad top end, it should be able to hang with, if not beat pretty much any VQ 5 speed." Please, no more VE vs. VQ Lets kill it now.

My modded ve pulls right into the rpm cutoff. I actually hit the rev limiter all the time because it doesn't feel like it's run out of breath. I raced a stock 5-sp VQ w/ 17" rims. He would get the jump but he would have to shift earlier than me.

My VQ pulls right to redline with no problem. My calculated shift points are: 1-2 6500, 2-3 6200, and 3-4 6000 which shows that the VQ is really no slouch on the top end. I was just trying to point out that the VE only breathes about 200rpms longer than the VQ. IMO, that's not proof that this machine is truely superior in the topend. I dare that the VE seems to die off quicker after peak power than the VQ does.

I'll drop it right here so that a worthless thread doesn't get started.

And to throw my 2 cents into the whole what engine is better argument I would say the VE sucks in stock form. It's fairly inefficient stock. However therefore it responds amazingly to mods that make it more efficient. An inefficient engine that makes 190 hp has some Bad A$$ potential

Bah.. my auto VG dyno'd 135 with intake and Y pipe.

Dave, I'll let you drive my VE next time I'm in KC. you'll see what we're talking about.
smooth, almost constant acceleration from about 2500rpm to redline.

dave, here is a scenerio for ya, since you were there when it happened

comming back from a car show in KS that i was at with ya when i had my max {where you beat me at}

on the freeway, we were even in second gear, hit third and i walked away, you had the same mods you do now, except you had the hks muffler then.

also on 95th street when i first met ya.

ahhhh the memories of the good ole days.

Nice try Fruitcake, but at the time (car show and when I met you) my only mods were the HKS intake and muffler and my heavy 17" Locos. Now I've got a Y-pipe, b-pipe, UDP, and a wheel tire combo that's 8lbs lighter. My 70mph+ acceleration is far better than it was back in 99

Matt-
Next time I see you I'll let you drive my VQ. Of course it will have the VI by then and it will pull strongly to redline Jeff's edit:::*bleep* *bleep* *bleep* *bleep* *bleepity bleep* hehe

Too bad the VI for the VQ will not perform as efficient as the stock VE's. I hear they are wired into a rpm switch?

No the beauty of my crap Nissan Key value clutch kit that was so weak, it wasn't even strong enough to hold my near stock VE power. WE actually went from stop but I couldn't push it. So he would pull away. But by the middle of 3rd I was back even and starting to pull. Then we had to shut down. I had the Y and intake I think. He was 100% stock but with some 17" Borbets.

why don't you guys take some VEs AND VQs, go ROMP on some camrys, and stop arguing about which MAXIMA is faster....it's not nice to pick on your own family

Have you looked at the VI dynos? The motor pretty much carrys the peak power from 5800rpms ALL the way too 6500rpms I wish there were a few VEs in our Kansas City group. Unforunately the only guy we have is Matt93SE and he'll be turboed soon. Maybe BryanH will get another VE Seriously, I do have a lot of respect for the VE. It's a sweet motor in a very nice body. I just don't see how people swear this motor is such the topend performer when the dyno plots (not just this one) show the motor dying off after 5700-5800rpms. IMO, "pulling strongly" to the 6500rpm redline means the motor is continuing to make power to near redline, not 5700-5800rpms.

I hear ya! It is pretty stupid, because just by looking at the dynos, the 2 motors are sooo similar, we have to start talking about them with mods, and doing this and this...STOCK for STOCK THEY ARE JUST ABOUT INDETICAL, WITH SOME MINOR DIFF...
