Who can tell me about 87 5 sp maxima's?
I have a 4th gen.
I have the opportunity to by my uncles 87 max 5 speed se. Any comments on this car? Is it rare?
It has 93k, new axles, brakes and clutch. He'll probably ask somewhere around $2000.
Heck, my car is a 95 se 5 sp with 165k.
Has anyone gone from a 4th gen to a 2nd gen?
Any comments?

Post in the first/second gen forum if you want to find out about a second generation max. $2000 for an 87 sounds too high also, unless this car is emmaculate and in perfect shape I can't see why it would be that much. Why do you want to go from a 4th gen to an 87?

My boxy '88 was great and wish I could still have it. I prefer the smaller Maximas over the newer bigger aero-Maximas.
Make sure that the fuel injector recall was completed. The timing belt should have been changed once already. The adjustable struts were outrageously expensive. And, $2k is too much unless your 100% sure that everything is perfect. These cars aren't rare; just not as popular anymore.
Look for rust. I lost my '88 Max because of the floor rot. Northeast salted winter roads eat pre-1990 Nissans.

I owned a 85SE and a 88SE both 5speeds. Guys this was the original 4DSC v6 manual tranny electronically controlled shocks, voice reminder "key is in the ignition" "lights are on" oil pressure gauge and voltage gauge. I had a pacesetter MONZA exhaust and K&N filter the car was fun. I had a white one with tan leather suede and a pewter one with tan interior. Same engine as 3rd Gen but less torque the VG in the 3rd Gen has 182 ft lbs and I think the 2nd Gen torque was around 160. Back in the day it was an awesome car.

God forbid that thing breaks though...one day in my dad's 1st gen the damn thing wouldn't shut up!!! and if you're stingy on gas it'll annoy the hell out of you until you fill up, especially if the button to mute it is broken!

2k is a bit steep, but if you do pick it up as a second car, you can make it into a project car!
Gut it, rollcage, turbo, what you have is a RWD 4 wheel IRS maxima! it's basically a N/A 300zx sedan! You could make that thing CRAAAAZY

Re: Who can tell me about 87 5 sp maxima's?
It would make for a good beater car. 2nd gen repair parts are easy and cheap to comeby also. Do the fuel injector recall and the will be good as long as you keep up with maintance. Mine/ours had 211k miles before I over-reved the engine and killed it.

I had an 87 SE 5 speed from 1987 to 1995. I put on 237,000 kilometers (142,000 miles) in that time. The car had very little down time. Other than normal maintenance, i had to put in a new starter and alternator, but otherwise nothing else. The clutch was a little sensitive, but otherwise i enjoyed the car very much. I was told at trade in time that the adjustable shocks needed replacement and it was very expensive. The dealer was going to install regular shocks to avoid the high cost.
