I have read a few posts about people on the forum getting their cars scratched and hit and cross my fingers--my max has not had that problem yet. Well, that changed yesterday afternoon when this stupid volkswagen parked about 2 inches behind me in front of my house. I knew it was trouble because he was too close. Lo' behold I come back and there is a big a$$ scratch on my tail with green paint (that was the guy in the green jetta). Anyway, I was pi$$ed off because he is a neighbor across the street I think but I have never talked to him. I was wondering--is there anything I can do? If I confront him, obviously he will deny it but since he scratched it, he ought to pay for it. And because there was no scene of accident, I am not sure if the cops would even care about a minor fender thing like this.
any words other than beating his butt up?

 

Beat his a.....wait um..i would go talk to him about it, he may own up and say he did it, but the worst thing he could do is deny it. How bad is the scratch? Can you buff it out?

 

naw, wish it could be buffed out...it is pretty big-- 3-4 parallel gashes into the bumper about 6 inches each.....took the paint right out. little bastar%^&!! LOL
yeah, I think I am going to sleep on it and see what I think tomorrow.

 

I agree with SEguy182, beat the ever living crap out of him. Then drag his sorry a$$ over to his car, open his mouth (hopefully you have chipped some of his teeth) and scratch the crap out of his car. O.K., maybe that's not the civil thing to do, but it would be my first reaction. Some people don't deserve to live.

love to do it, but i guess these guys will have their days. It happens in NYC with cars parked very closely, however that doesn't give people the right to just ignore things like this when that happens. If you are at fault then, pony the $$ up to fix the damage.

I just found a major door ding on my '02. This one has taken some paint off of my car. Needless to say, I am . Now I have to visit a paintless dent removal place and get that touched up before the winter gets here.

We have the problem of peeps parking too close to cars here in Chicago.

 

I would confront him about it and see how he responds, then I would take the necessary actions from there. Becuase you know it's his car paint on your car..

 

If you go talk to him nicely, he might respond nicely. If you are a jerk, then he might not be nice back to you. If he doesn't own up, talk to your insurance company about whether you should call police or not.

 

I got plenty of dings, dents, and chips. My car was flawless when I first got it last year, but now it has all kind of flaws

If you let him drive away then you will have no recourse. While his car is still parked there take a picture showing the green car and the green scratches (even better if you can show your car color on his car as well...) then approach him nicely. If he is a ****, then call the police and file a report. They will most likely not be able to dtermine fault unless he confesses, but you can hand it to you insurance as a possible hit-and-run, see if they run with it.

There are ways of determining if it's his car... Even heard of Chromatography? It's a process by which paint/dye/ink is dissolved across tissue paper by Sulphuric Acid (remembering bach to high school chem class here!), breaking it out into it's constituent colors. This produces a kind of 'fingerprint' image that will be the same for any one kind of paint. You could tell for sure that it was exactly the same paint (ie VW "Mold Green" or whatever), so either his car or an identical car did it.

To get a lab to do this would be costly (to do it yourself would be inadmissable in court), so if it's not in the $1000's of damage, forget it - but if there is a significant amount of damage then it may be worth it.

(A description of the process of chromatography followed by a formal request for a sample of his car's paint may convince him to 'fess up. Prolly not, but you never know... )
