transmissions & motor life

Generally speaking will an automatic transmission equipped motor last longer than a 5-speed ? The reason I ask is because of the rpm you cruise at in an auto going around 80mph is alot lower than in the 5-speed. Or does the auto put more of a strain on the motor?

I would think that a motor will last longer when mated to an auto, since with a manual, you can abuse it more but a manual will take more abuse than an automatic.

Interesting question. Even though the auto spins slower at highway speeds, it has to work harder to move the car from a standstill and accelerate it. Maybe it evens out.
