Electric Fan
Electric Fan
My electric fan shuts off when I shut the car off...is that normal? I thought I read on here that the fan will continue to run until a certain temperature is reached.
If they discontinued this in 2002, is there a way to rewire to get the fan to work this way?

Hmmm...I read it here:

Has anyone rewired to achieve this effect?

I thought the fan-after-car-is-off was a honda-only thing. I haven't heard of maximas having an electric fan (as mentioned in that post you linked to) that stays on, but I don't know much about the fifth-gens.
The only time I've heard of people making a fan switch/doing something to allow the fan to run with the car off has been with forced induction, namely turbos. If your max is just stock, and you can verify that the fan isn't supposed to be on after the car is shut off, I don't see why you should worry at all.

it's not just honda... volvo cross country (so I'm guessing all new volvos) do it too

My Dad's 944 (stock) used to do this as well. I think its just personal preference. Just like changing your oil at 3k instead of 5k, I would feel 'safer' having the fan run until the engine is cool whether the engine is off or on.
I'm sure someone has rewired in order to achieve this. The stock fan runs until a temp sensor shuts it off or the key is turned off. It seems like you could run a wire directly to the fuse box and bypass the key to achieve this, however I am no electrician.
If someone has done this, I would really like to see some instructions and pics.

In a turbo situation, not only would the fan run, but the engine would stay running, too. It has to circulate the oil around the turbo that is absolutely dying to cool down.
I think you may find that fans in non-tubro cars that continue to run after the car has shut off tend to be 4 bangers. I guess their heads get hotter than normal b/c of much less surface area to dissipate heat. The fans are probably running to help prevent future head warpage. A V6 has 2 heads, greater surface area, and the cams don't work as hard as in 4 banger's cylinder head.
Also, my friend's 96 Nissan Altima runs the fans sometimes when the car is off. 4 banger as well.
