running too rich or too lean...

how can u tell? is their some kind of self diagnosis that i can do? or is it only reserved for mechanics with the proper tools?

Checking the condition of your spark plugs will help. I believe that the electrode will be a blackish color if you are running rich...check your Haynes manual for more info.

2 ways:
1. Check the plugs if they are black with soot its rich. If they are ash white then it is lean.

2. Use a wide band o2 sensor and log the A/F ratio vs rpm at WOT.
