Rim Q: Does it HAVE to be 35-40mm?

Yes, I read the FAQ first, so no flames.

Does the wheel offset absolutely have to be 35-40mm? I saw a nice set of wheels(current 'Stang GT 17s, I thought they'd look nice if I powdercoated 'em in black) for only $100 on Ebay, but the offset is 32mm!

So how much trouble would I have for a measly 3mm? I know it can make a difference once the car gets moving, but I'd love to get them if possible. So umm, help.

The bolt pattern is 5x4 1/2.

The more offset, the deeper set the wheels will be. so in this case, they will stick out a little... the back will be ok, but with my 35mm offset on the e's the front's are just over the fender. 32mm will be fine, but they will stick out more.

The GT rims will fit on the Maxima... but finding hub rings will be a challage me thinks.

They'll stick out a little bit..

I've got a 16" Kosei K1s on my 96 Maxima and they have a 35mm offset. The wheels and tires are perfectly flush with the fenders. I'd figure a 32mm offset would put them slightly outside the fender. I've seen pics of 17" GT, 16" Probe GT, and 17" Cobra wheels on 3rd and 4th gen Maximas and they seem to fit fine. They just stick out a little. Just don't go too low with your suspension or you may risk cutting up the tire on the fenders....maybe?

BTW, the Mustang wheels are all very HEAVY. 17s in the new GT style weigh about 28lbs each. With the 245/45 tires I think the combo is near 50 lbs.

Remember ...

to also check the center bore to see if it fits.

Ideally, you should have the correct size hub-centric rings - it may be hard to find a set of rings to match the bore of a Mustang to that of a Maxima.

Thanks! I gotcha...

There was also a set of the '93-'95 GT wheels(16s) for even less. Hopefully they'd be lighter, if I decided to go that way.
I'm not planning on lowering too much, since I don't have the cash. I was thinking of maybe the H&R springs, since they don't lower too much, and still have a nice ride. H&R sells hub rings too.
I just need some shocks now, and I was thinking of the KYB GR-2s, since there isn't an AGX application available yet. I don't need the adjustability either, just something I can use the shocks with. A shop near me sells them, so hopefully I can get a good price for them and the shock will work well too. Does anyone have any experience with the GR-2?

I've got the GR-2s for the rears and they work great. They were $56 from the Tire Rack plus I got the recommended bushings which were $8 total. The fronts are $78. I just ordered the Koni adjustable struts because I wanted a little adjustment for the heaviest part of the car.

If your tires/wheels stick out beyond the fender, then you'll have s**t flippin' all over the sides of your car, from headlight to taillight: mud, pebbles, tar, roadkills, and everything else puddled up on the street. I'd think twice...

Hey DaveB, thanks for the info about the GR-2s! If I can buy my springs first, I'll see about buying the shocks from that shop close to me and having them install the combo.
