No front plates, dark paint, and Laser speed detection

I'm of the assumption that its difficult to be targeted by police with Laser if your paint is dark and you have no plate.

Laser speed detectors work by reflecting light (around 980nm, just beyond visible red) usually off the front of your car, and typically they target your front license plate, which is highly reflective.

I've been clocked by laser about 4-5 times now, usually going about 80mph on MA I95 or I93, but never got pulled over. My detector goes nuts, and there were few cars on the road, so it is pretty easy to single me out. Of course I slow down right away, but by then it's too late.

Have I just been lucky, or do you think my black car with no front plate has anything to do with it? Maybe they were looking for REAL speeders?

Your headlights reflect as well.

But, if you have your highbeams on, they put out enough IR energy to "jam" the laser device. No, I'm not making this up, Car and Driver demonstrated it a long time ago.

I concur with the driving with high beams on to throw off the laser. Do the HID lights on low or high beam have this effect as well?

Since we're on the subject, does anyone have a radar/laser jammer, and do they work very well?

I have that paint you put on ur licence paint to block radar, but I think its a gimick. I was also wondering about HIDs "blinding" the radar. Where car I find that car and driver article?

Not radar, laser. Radar would not be affected by light.

As long as your paint is glossy it doesn't matter what colour it is. If you can see your reflection in the finish the laser will have no trouble bouncing back. The only "colour" that would absorb the laser would be matt black. But then you'd have to worry about your headlights and license plate. From what I've read it's pretty much a toss up which of the two is the stronger source of reflections. I have seen advertisements for full frontal matt black bra's with headlight covers that supposedly block lidar but I'm not sure how effective they are.

As for highbeams jamming the signal I think this would only work if you didn't have a front license plate. Also newer lidar systems using pulse encoding are less susceptible to this kind of defense.

I thought I read somewhere too that even without the front plate most cops just aim for the windshield which will reflect back the laser. I do not know if this is true or not, but I assume it is since a lot of states that do not require front plates still use laser and need to aim it somewhere.
