Rear Brake Questions

I was just doing my wifes brakes and noticing the rear pads do not have shims. Do all 4G Maximas come this way? We have this questionable "clunk" everytime we brake up and the dealer hasn't fixed it in over 3 attempts. They claimed to change the rear shocks and even put anti-seize on the rear pads. I suspected a pad too small something else in the caliper area. Any clues? Oh BTW, thanks for the advice on the ECU codes fellas!
