I was wanting to get some 98/99 taillights for my 96' also. I would clear em' myself but from what people on the forum have said....it seems pretty hard. Do I have to get the 98/99 tails through a dealership or can i get them somewhere off the net?

sometimes you can find them on ebay...but you'll probably have to order through a discount infiniti parts store online...that's your best bet...

Ya, those are okay too. It's pretty much the same thing as far as appearance anyways.......just diamond cut. Do you have any websites?

what about takin out the whole middle section of the trunk, the redish area where the word "Infiniti" is located (between the taillights)
anyone got ideas, i like the style concept of the maxima trunk, i hate the red ish in the midd.

I TOTALLY agree with you on that one. I have a 96' also for those who don't know. Is there any way the red strip along the rear mid. can be removed?

No. Well it probably could be removed but you won't like how it looks. It's part of the trunk, not just molding. You will have an indention underneath it. If you want to see a photoshop of how it would look w/o the red do a search of previous threads. BBaker posted a pic of it in this forum.

You could always have it painted like I've seen some of the 3rd Gens had done. I, personally, don't like that look, but that's me.

As for the taillights, let's a get a GD going since I want those lights for my 97 as well.

Well the thing is the 98-99 lights dont match your center piece on your trunk, they are 2 different colors.

the cefiro ones dont have the same cross section molding, our 96-97's have a little dip in the center and the cefiros do not. you can ask anyone who has bought them that they are displeased with that.

I've cleared out about 6-7 pairs of tail lights. if you email me I'll send you pics of what they look like.

I can do it, it takes about an our and a half to do and it looks good.

i30mike-you used that ceiling light plastic in yours... its still a little foggy, I would suggest you try and take it out and see how much better it matches the reverse lights.

Do you mean use something other than the ceiling light plastic or replace the other with ceiling light plastic as well???

In person they is hardly any noticeable diff. when I ask(non-org. members that is) which one is replaced they have a hard time guessing.

they do look good to the average joe. Thats the way I originally had mine done. Then I went and took that ceiling light piece out, because it actually matches better in my opinion. Either way you can't go wrong. I wish I had some comparison pictures to post. My website went down and I haven't put another up.

Oh, you just left the space empty. Hmmm.... I would think the lense would be too clear and the inside of the housing would be seen. I would like to see some comparison pics.

Unlike the 96 Maxima's, the 96 I30 tails can be cleared out. The process used is almost identical to clearing out the tails on a 97-98 maxima. There has been multiple how 2's written so I am not going to go into detial on every step.

The only difference that I know of is:

1.The housing is held together by one screw and multiple plastic clips that surround the housing. And of course the adhesive. The plastic clips must be pushed in for the housing to come apart.

2.And obviously the shape of the tail lights are different from a Maxima, so a different size insert will have to be made. But it looks like SLC choose not to put an insert in and he says it looks better. Not making one would make things go faster and easier.

Anyone who does a indepth search will find exactly what they need to know for clearing out tails.
A few things I learned are:

1.IMO a heat gun is the best method for opening up the tails. A hair dryer is the safest but takes forever. Many people will say that the oven is the best but I don't think so. I have used every different method and I like the heat gun.

2.As you are heating up the adhesive start to push in the plastic clips. They may break, but that is OK. These clips are a PITA, but they all need to be cleared out of the way for the housing to come apart.

3.As you are heating up the adhesive, start to check if the housing can be pulled apart. Usually you can get it to budge a little, then heat it up some more, then pull a little more, then more heat etc, etc....

4.Be careful. Having patience is the #1 key. don't force anything. Cracking the housing is very possible.

5.If you decide to use the insert method, take your time sizeing it up. Sandpaper or a metal file worked fine for me getting it the right shape. Nothing worse than getting it all back together and the insert not fitting correctly.

6.Use some silicone sealent when putting the housing back together. These things were not meant to come apart so they don't always seal nicely when put back together. Small beads applied to the adhesive will ensure no leaking.

I had to open my tails more than once to get it right. These are just some of the things that will save you from having to do that. I am no master customizer or anything, so I am sure anyone can do it. As long as they are patient.
To give you some idea, It took me a total of 10 hrs to do it the first time!! I could do it now in no time, but be prepared to take some time.

If you have any other questions email me I30tMikeD@Maxima.0rg

if you have it to me on a friday I can get it out the following monday. The only problem I run into is that I can't get it from the shipping company the day it arrives. But I'll get it out as quickly as I possibly can. I do have a pair of used ones that I can send to you and switch in the mean time. That would be a little pricier in shipping but might be more convenient(sp)

I live in Balimore Maryland

Well my old ones have a small crack in them as well, and they didn't fit perfectly. I did them before I really knew how to do them. So they turned out horrible, then one day it all came to me and now when I do them they fit back together and look much better. Just PM me when you are ready to send them out. we'll work out a time schedule that will hopefully get them turned around and back the fastest. BTW where do you live?
