xenon plasma h.i.d.'s? for real?
i was browsing through ebay when i noticed this for the i30/max's.
anyone have any info proving or refuting this technology and/or plausibility of these? are they for real, and do they work?
don't want to waste money i could be saving for a mevi, eh?
anyhow this is the link to the page of what i saw.
cheers.

There's no way ANY bulb with any kind of coating on it is going to approach the intensity of real HID.
Heck, those bulbs would be very dim compared even to a stock, clear bulb.
The colored glass or coatings on those bulbs act like sunglasses - they filter light - thus you get less light.
You also need to understand that halogen bulbs and HID bulbs are totally different in themselves. HID bulbs provide light from an arc within the bulb. Halogen bulbs provide light from a heated filament.

it's funny that i even ask this question, in a way. i sometimes design lights for theatre, so am familiar with diff types of bulbs - and really should have known better
i guess i'm just a rube at a fair!! lol
i kinda figured something didn't add up. but i did do a little research to find that indeed the coating is for color, but the "xenon gas filled bulb" (supposed to make the energy move faster, hence brighter) is snake-oil!
well thanks NEway for the replies.

I don't know. This looks like a pretty good markup (for them!) and those bulbs aren't really all that much brigher... I bought my Japanese version PIAA bulbs from iMotorGear (http://www.imotorgear.com/dept.asp?s...%5Fid=15090102) and they are a little pricey, but they are also the Japanese version 7500K(elvin) temperature bulbs - described as "Plasma Spark Blue". The direct replacement for the H3 ('02 anyway) fog lights is stock # H287 at $84.50, and the highbeam (9005) is # H290 at $89. These bulbs "list" for $128-138 per pair... The H3 fogs lights and 9005 highbeams are both 55W (=100watt halogen). Don't worry about the > 35watt OEM difference in the fog bulbs - the 2001 and earlier had 55 watt bulbs in the fogs and the wiring harness is the same in the '02's. I'm not certain that these are exactly the same for the '03's, but it sure seems like they would be! I've been running 55watt PIAA fogs in mine for more than 16 months, now - and other than the fact that they do get a bit warm (to the touch - nothing damaging, of course!) - they just give off more light and have a more HID-like color. I did have one of the H3 (fog) bulbs blow after 12 months, but other than that no problems (likely a result of the installer - you just can't touch these bulbs with your fingers much less oily rags - they'll overheat and bust).
Just as a warning - I've replaced my front (1157) and rear (1156) turn signals with their brand ("MotionR") silvered bulbs and paid less than $10 per pair for them, and they want $30 a set on the web-site shown in the previous message. Actually, they are the American instead of Euro-standard (1157E and 1156E) bulbs, so you have to go at them with a Dremel tool because the pins are directly opposite (i.e. 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock vs. the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock the I35 uses).
Look for them on the 'www.ebay.com' site - that's where I bought them for myself. I think I might have paid $12 for the 1156's, but the 1157's were $9 I'm pretty certain. I found them by searching on keyword "Silverbright" which is the Sylvania brand-name for the silvered amber-glow bulbs. I think maybe the 1156's I found just searching for '1156'. Of course, like everyone else, most ebay'ers charge $5 or so shipping to get around paying ebay full price for the sale (can you say cheap?).
