My I30 is out of comission!!!

I was driving my I30 home from church today and was making a left hand turn at speed, when suddenly it lost momentum and coasted to a stop. Thankfully I coasted into a turn lane for a residential street and wasnt stuck in the middle of the road. Anyway the problem seems to be in the drivetrain somewhere, when the car is in drive or reverse, it makes a load groaning noise like the engine is proucing power to the tranny, but its not making it to the wheels. I surmise that one of my cv joints may have broken, because the car seems to get in and out of gear fine, and the speedometer reads speed when you hit the gas although the car doesnt move. I had the car towed to my dad's local mechanic to look at it. Incidentally my dad's 96 I30 had the same problem about 6 months ago and it turned out to be the cv joint. The thing that ****es me off is that I am meticulous about any of my cars, and none of the cv boots were broken because I checked them about a month ago. I dont know how the joint could have just gone bad like that, if that is what is actually wrong with it. After having owned many different cars: BMW, Acura, Honda, Lexus, i've never had a problem like this. It kinda ****es me off, but I still love my infiniti, hopefully it wont turn out to be a huge problem. I'm just wondering if any of you guys have expereinced a problem of this nature with your cars, as I had mentioned before my dad did, so im wondering whether this is a family curse or a common problem.
