Shift **** Replacement for 5 speed

Does anyone know how to get the stock shift **** off a 5 spd manual '96 I30t? Do I need to unscrew something or is it brute force?

Apologies if this has been covered in a previous thread. I haven't had any luck with the "poor man's search" method.

TIA for all answers or links to previous threads on the subject.

Should unscrew (counter-clockwise). It takes some force to remove it, though. Some guys have ruoined their shiftknob trying to remove it, so be careful.

Do you have enother **** to replace it with? I have a woodgrain MOMO **** that matches the woodgrain trim. Interested?

Got it off thanks, looks like there was some thread lock on it, took some force to get it off.

Ordering a MOMO shifter **** from this place.

Does yours happen to be that same shift ****?

I'm assuming the threads on these are standard, as in I won't need to modify it to screw it on.

It will come with sleves that go inside the ****. You find one that BARELY slips over the threads on the shaft- preferrably one that is snug. THen you place that sleve inside the **** and twist it on. The threads will "cut" grooves in the rubber sleve, and then you tighten it down with 3 hex-head screws that are included. Over the screws will go a cap. MAKE SURE THAT YOU PUT THE CAP ON FIRST, and make sure that it faces threads-up. It will make sense when you see it.

THe **** that I have looks like this:

$45 is a good price for a MOMO ****. I can do $35 shipped for the one that I have, if you want it. It matches well (as you can see from the pic).

Your description of the install makes sense.

I'm almost thiking of ordering this one too, then see which one I like better.

Only another $19. Figure if I don't like it, I can throw it on Ebay and probably break even.

While I've got you. Is there any way to upgrade my school bus sized steering wheel? I still want the air bag. Wonder if a G35 wheel would fit. Any thoughts there?

I would definately buy both I I was shopping for a shift ****. I need to warn you that the $19 **** looks to be darker than the first one, and may not match.

About the steering wheel, I really do not know. You woudl have to check the bolt pattern where it attaches to the steering column, and I would imagine that the airbags have different control modules, what with the 8-year difference in manufacturing dates.

Ordered both, why not.

Didn't think there was an easy fix to the steering wheel.

I'm just getting started on the slippery slope of mods for my car. I've owned it for 5 years totally stock. It isn't fun to drive anymore. But I'm not ready to spend $$$ on a newer sports sedan soo.. I just upgraded the tires/wheels this week. Some improvement in handling, but who am kidding. It still corners like a pig. Ordered a Stillen RSB. Should be here on Monday. I've read good things about it, so I'm hoping that will give me some of the handling performance I'm looking for. If that doesn't do it, I might have to go for new springs/struts. After doing some research here and elsewhere, I'm leaning towards Eibach springs and Tokico Illuminas.

96 through 99

The 96 is most common the following years are in descending order. I have seen 97s and 98s online but not a 99 yet.

I believe that at MOST 10% of i30s were manual...and only about 5% were "touring" models...and I have both!

Your car is pretty rare.....

I think I might have something more rare. I have only seen one other BLK/BLK I30t 5spd and it was on ebay. When I had my 97se it was Dark Green with tan leather and I wanted Blk interior. I saw MikeD's car and missed the tan leather. THe Blk on BLk is nice, I added a MOMO **** (similiar to yours but it has black leather on it as well) Someone told me woodgrain on blak is a and i should switch to black or go with brushed aluminum, but for now I will keep it as it is.

Most definately the B&B 5MT I30t is a rarity.

As to interior, JUST SAY NO to aluminum trim. You have a classy ride- keep it that way!

Although swapping ALL or the woodgrain for black plactic WOULD be knight-rider-ish!

Any pics of the interior?

I no longer use the worrdgrain ****. My MOMO is all black leather. I will take pics, someday...

Oh common man....no aluminum? When I get some money together I'm gonna be getting a gunmetal dash kit, and I don't think it will take away from the class of my ride. It won't stand out as much as plain aluminum, plus it will match my rims and gauge rings! You just wait and see......

I have some pics..

But none with cut shifter and MOMO ****. I will take some this weekend. Ironically I had interest in purchasing your car, (2 months ago) but Lou told me had a buyer. Long story:
2 years ago I taught my niece to drive a stick, it was my 97se 5sp. She loved the quickness and intake and muffler. At the age of 17 she was convinced one day she would own a Maxima. SO she called me 2 months ago and was looking for a 4th Gen Maxima, I told her what I was driving and she made me an offer ( I could not refuse) so I called Lou and wanted to purchase his car (at that time) He told me he had a buyer so I told my niece no deal  but I am glad I kept the car. Unfortunatley I am still 4X4ing it (on 17s) this will be taken care of before the end of the month. Your car looks great and I am sure it handles well, with the additions you have added.

Later,
Pat

I really like the car, despite having a few issues with little things.

I am pulling the springs in a few weeks, if you would like to buy them. It rides level, but the roads on my commute are about to get bad, so I need to move to a higher, softer spring
