you can't judge gas mile from that method. You need to fill your tank up all the way. reset the tripometer. Drive till empty. Fill up all the way again and divide the miles driven on that tank by how many gallons you filled back up with.
Doing that a few times will give an accurate gas mileage.
Oh, and don't run your AC.

**** something must be really wrong with your car if you get 18 mpg with the AC on. I get 29 mpg with the AC on doing 80 mph. Either I am really lucky or something is really wrong with your car.

29 mpg is just unheard of afaik ... i read here someone saying that any speed more than 55 mph will reduce the mileage, isn't it true ?
I ain't sure if I need to replace plugs, I bought it with 96k miles and don't know when the previous owner changed'em ... this might improve the mileage I guess but 23 mpg combined is not bad when the car is rated 21/27 mpg on city/highway. But for when I switch the AC on.
I guess mileage does go low when we use AC but any idea why it's sooo low (18mph) for me? Anything to take care of w.r.t AC ?? Thanks.
1998 I30 100,801 miles.

Hard to tell what is going on with my car or yours. I would say you should replace your plugs, should be done every 60k, however I have 65k and I keep putting it off for my car. I travel 30 miles each way to work, and was making a 600 mile round trip for work for 5 weeks in a row and every time it was between 27-29 mpg. I am damn happy to be getting this kind of mileage out of a V6.
I have noticed that the mileage changes a bit from 89 to 91 octane but I get maybe 15 less miles per tank. I think it also has to do with how you drive too.
I can get 23 mpg out of my gfs explorer but her lead foot gets 18 at best.

I was getting about 18 MPG with no AC and a good mix both city and highway. After I put in a new knock sensor and o2 sensors, I am now getting about 22 MPG!
And I have clean everything (fuel filter, air filter, sparkpugs)!!

I got exactly 269.9 miles from 14.977 gallons which is 18.02 mpg with AC on all the time with abt 70:30 Highway:City driving.
I guess it costs a fortune to replace what all you did I30ds ! I did replace air filter lately and the mileage jumped from 18 to 22 (NO AC!!!), but with the temperatures soaring here, I have to put the AC on and it brought the mileage back to 18 :-(
I was thinkin of changing the spark plugs but I just need to know how to confirm if they need to be changed!!!

I'd say it's time to replace your spark plugs. Sounds like a Knock sensor might need to be replaced too. Don't know how to tell if yours is bad, but it seems to be a problem that most people are dealing with. I would replace the spark plugs and see how it turns out. Yeah it might cost some money to get it done, but you'll make up for it in the gas you save real quick.
