96 I30 hesitation for about 7 minutes after start-up

Hey everyone,

i have a 96 I30 automatic and it runs great! I have noticed that after start up, when shifting from first to second (automatic) for the first 7 minutes or so of driving, there is a hesitation or jump (bump) feeling. After the car warms up, it goes away and drives shifts like a normal car should.

I change the oil every 3000 miles, have the engine flushed and do everything else that you should do to maintain your car. I will admit I do need to change the spark plugs, but thats about it.

Does anyone else have this problem and does anyone know what causes it? A buddy of mine who is an engineer, said that it was just because the trany fluid is not warmed up yet and not to worry about it.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

I notice this in my car too! But sorry that I can't give any suggestions, I myself was looking for an answer but I was content saying myself that this is normal for all cars :-)

Do a check engine code diagnosis, if no light, then check for ghost codes, then do the plugs, and change the fluid if need be. this also could possibly be a sensor problem that the diagnosis should identify

flthere: Thanks for the info. At least I know it's not just me with this situation.

97I30touring: Thanks, I will try that. I recently changed the fluid, so that is not it. I need to change the plugs definately, so i will try that soon, and I will try an figure out how to run the codes. That is new to me and I am not sure what I need to do that or how to go about it.

Thanks again everyone and have a great day!

Is it misfiring in anyway? You might have a bad coil pack...

Nope, I don't think it is. The car runs like brand new! And even better now that I just had an engine flush to get all the gunk and metal shavings out of it.

Here is a dumb question: What are symptoms of misfiring?

I did replace the fuel filter and by engine flush, I am not sure what I mean to be honest. LOL I think it is where they hook up two hoses to something under the hood and flush a "cleaner" fluid through the engine. I think it can only be done when you are getting your oil changed or something. It supposidly, flushes out the sludge build up and metal shavings and gunk in the engine.

Can you tell that when it comes to under the hood, i have no idea what the hell I am talking about. I know where the battery is under there!!!!!! lol
