How often should you change your shocks and struts?

For the average daily driver, how often should you change your shocks and struts? How do you know when or if you need to change them. I am sure it is not cheap to get all four done at once and I am not sure if an average non-mechanic would be able to do this job.

If anyone has these answers, please let me know. I am just curious. I don't want to spend money I don't need to, but I also want my ride to be as new as possible and drive its best.

NOTE: I am not trying to mod anything or lower it, just replace if needed.

Thanks!

Mine were over 130,000 miles old and still going fine, just got new ones b/c i lowered it. It costs a bloody freaking fortune, in the realm of 600-800 dollars, its pretty difficult from what I saw to install them

If your stock strut boots have deteriorated, then I would look at new struts. Also, I do know that there is a bearing in there that can make a god awful amount of racket on the older vehicles. Installing new struts is not that hard. All you have to do is get a spring compressor for the removal/ install of the spring. Other than that it is basically a bolt on job.
