1996 infiniti i30, odometer stops

I just purchased infiniti i30 , 1996 from a person. Soon after bought it, I
realized the odometer didn't rotate (while, accurately, it rotate sometimes). its speedometer still works fine and no light comes on. Called a dealer and they said it didn't look like someone demaged it on purpose. What could be the reason, and how to correct it?

thanks.

Max Mutes, i believe he was saying to do a carfax report, contact the Better Business Bureau and make a complaint towards the dealer that sold you the car, and then if need be, get a lawyer and sue the pants off the dealership! lol

yes, I bought it from a private party, not from a dealer. Both trip odometer and master odometer stops almost all time, although when they did rotate, they moved at the same pace. I believe that I have driven it for 200 miles after purchasing it, but trip odometer (I reset it as soon as bought it) only shows 31. It is very likely that actual miles on the car is much higher than it shows (97k).

Yeah, you can still go back to the person you bought it from and say I want my money back. If they don't give you money back then you sue them for fraud.

i drove my car about 3k mi and it stopped at 105999 and didn't want to roll after. i took out the gauge cluster and pushed it up to 106000 and it's been running happily since. maybe that's your solution.

That is pretty messed up. I know different states have different laws, but a person cannot sell you a car like that. That thing could have 200K miles for all you know. That would change the value significantly. Now, your not gonna get some $200,000 settlement. But I would go get my money back.

I know no one has ever gotten into my odometer but sometimes I have hit the tripometer button and had it reset in a certain way that made the tripometer not turn.

The odometer was still working and ticking away total miles. I have both plucked the tripometer button or tapped the side of the instrument cluster at different times to get it working again.

This doesn't exactly address your situation of the odometer not working but indicates there are abnormalities possible and the seller wasn't pulling a fast one.

If the state you're in does inspections, normally they record the mileage at the time of inspection. See if the owner or the place he took it to be done has those records and that should show some decent/reliable info before you go hunting them down with legalities.

Other service records should also be asked for...
