The general accepted definition is someone who modifies their car in such a way that neither handeling, power, nor braking are improved. Mods that serve no real purpose besides that they are different than stock. There are exceptions, for expample, cefiro one piece headlights would not be rice.

Rice..aka...poser

Disgrace to some, enhance to others, mods to anybodys care are done b/c the owner wants them too, any car can look nice, to you, but you aren't ridin n drivin their car so do with it what they please.

Yes, you are a ricer. But it is only in the eye of the beholder. Many would say there is just no thing as a ricer only different preferances. I do agree that to each his own, but to me there is a line that is crossed when one becomes a ricer. Nismo head pillow?....nismo oil cap...red wires in the einge...crazy colored bulbs and gauges. To me that is way crossing the line. But hey do what ya want.

Well cool! Thanks everybody for defining this to me. I never thought this thread would become so involved, but it's cool and good to hear everyones opinions.

At least I know I am a true ricer at the moment. lol Although I will say that I have not (IMO) crossed the line yet, just done suttle things to suit my curiosity of weather or not I could actually do things and make them work properly.

Thanks again.

An operational definition for a ricer is a person who goes over-the-top with exterior/interior mods. Excessive and gaudy are great words for it.

I think there are many nice, tasteful mods that are purely for looks that aren't classified as ricy to me. For example, an I30 can be totally tasteful and beautiful with non-stock wheels, body kit, and paintjob. Those same alterations can cause another person's car to be complete rice, it depends on what they get. I think a ricer is simply someone with bad taste. Or is it just different taste? Nah, they definitely have bad taste =)

As for interior lights and things, most of it falls into the immediate rice category. Adding functional, correctly aimed HIDs to your car? Cool. Adding blue/reg/green lights on your valve stem, windshield washer nozzle, etc. just doesn't make the car look better... to me. The ricers like it for its chintzy value... "Heh heh, sweet, I gots green lights on my hood, yo." No, you're an idiot, end yourself. =)

I like your explaination best Colossus!

3ft aluminum wings, Giant, oddly colored body decals, gaping body kits that dont follow the design of the car at all, coffee-can exhausts, and "type R" stickers...

Those are all good examples of what I call rice! People just go overboard with the "look at me" mods. Makes their car look outrageous... not clean.

Not necessarily. I got an I30, because I wanted the luxury look. I did not get it to "Go" Yes, I'll have a new suspension soon and Y Pipe, and prolly a new brake system, but other than that it's all "Show" cuz that's what I feel a luxury car is. Now if you were to get a Sportier Benz or BMW or the G35 Coupe then I could see you leaning towards "Go" but then again doesn't it "Go" already? Plus, you gotta take in the fact if it's Auto or not as well. I was actually shocked when I found out the I30 also came in Stick. Now, if you hook up a Honda like it's a racer and it's Auto now THAT to me is Rice.

I'm not saying what you think is wrong, that's just not how I see it, but to each his own.

I think a ricer is someone who tries to make their car look fast and japanese, but in the process makes the car look worse.

Good example is pimp my ride show on MTV. Some of the crap they do to cars is COMPLETELY RICE. The episode where the black girl came in with a blue early 90s ford escort that looked ok, came out to be a BMW look alike 318ti, it was horrible. Newer cars do not need flames and a billion emblems and symbols on them if you are not sponsored. I hate seeing civics with sticker of every mod they have on there car on the front quarter panel. Disgusting! Another ricer is my next door neighbors daughter. She has a 98 honda accord with mazda 6 headlights-rear lights-wheels-wing-wind deflectors-rearwindow deflector-LX model with fart can exhaust. Now she kept the Accord lx symbol on the back, but added TypeR badges to the trunk, and the front doors with pepboys purple tint on the windows. OMG it's a disgrace, I want to report her so bad to the rice cops. The sad thing is she thinks she looking good in her Honda 6 (mazda 6) lx.

I would like to add something on to your statement if I could. Your defintion is on the money. I agree. The bases behind the term "rice, or ricer" developed a little over 30 years ago (I believe the late 1960's) when people first began show real interest in modifying Japanese cars for performance. In Japan, drifting and sliding spelled high performance then where as in the U.S., dragging and slalom meant high performance. American muscle car owners figured making your car slide was a joke and this was some Asian craze nick-named the infactuation rice-rockets. Well forward 15-20 years later and the term change, after many imports proved to have the power and perfromance Americans liked. However, in the 1990's when the Japanese Power wars took place, the term resurged with vengenece and was used for anyone making use of mods to their import performance cars. (if Asian of course.)

Well the term as we know it now, (pointless modifications performed to a vehicle with the intent of posing as a real racer and/or performance modifications only done to compete in a Show Class category) came to be in the late 1990' til now. Wild paint, body kits, guady wheels, colorful bulbs, stickers, chrome and loud exhaust don't make a car rice. Its the passion of having useless mods for a situation or event. Like someone using gigantic wings, hundreds of stickers, colorful tint, tons of interior pieces that really don't form a theme but look like a parted junker, hi power stereo system and of course we can't for get exterior pieces that supposedly make the car look different (think modifying a neon rear to look like a Ferrari or putting large diameter wheels on say an Civic.) and then attempting to take it to the track claiming its time of 0-60 in 15 sec is fast. That makes a car rice. Or having a ton of motor work done and tuning to make the car fast only to enter it into a car show in the "wildest show car mods category) makes a car rice.

Here in the south, a new term has surged for people with Domestic vehicles in this same situation, we call them pork-chops. LOL

HOLY CRAP! It was like we opened up a dictionary and the deffiniton popped out at us. LOL

I am reminded of in the movie Old School, when Will Farrow has the debate with the Ragin Cajun and after Will debates, he says "Whoa, what happened? I blacked out for a minute."

LOL cool.
