Ok. Where is this valve and is it EXPENSIVE? OBD2 monitors too many things.

Behind the driver's side rear wheel. There is a black canister tht is a bit smaller than a shoebox. There is a valve/gadget thingy attached to it. That is usually the cluprit. I could not get mine OUT, though, so I just lived with the CEL on. I was about to fix it when the car got totalled. I wrote a thread on how to fix it a while back.

I mean is that the charcoal canister for a most GM vehicles is under the hood. I am not used to looking in the tail end of the car for it. I did look and found the canister with no trouble. I took the purge valve off and cleaned it and put it back together and now I get a code P0446 in addition to my P1446 so I checked www.car-part.com and found a 98 I30 and they want $50 for that whole canister assembly. If these purge valves are prone to failure, please let me know as I called the Infiniti dealer and the purge valve is $72. I don't want this nickel and diming me to death. I hate to buy the $72 part and find that there is more causing this P1446 and now P0446 code. Again I don't want to buy a 7 year old junkyard part and have the same issues if this is a common problem for the I30's.

Ah, gotcha. Well, most people have found that cleaning the purge control valve with carb cleaner or a similar product will fix the problem. Did you reset the codes in the ECM after you cleaned the valve?

Yes I did and I cleared the P1446 but the P0446 is stuck. I haven't checked to see if the car has set the P1446 again or not.

Ok. 4 days and no P1446. But I still have the new P0446 which is EVAP Emission Control System Vent circuit Malfunction. I can clear the code and recheck and I have the P0446 back as a pending code and as soon as I start the car the SEL light is on. What did I bugar up when I took the purge valve off?

PLEASE GIVE ME SOME GUIDANCE.

There was only 1 plug that I unhooked. I didn't remove the whole canister assembly. Just the purge valve.
