Heat Shield Rattling

I have an 00 I30T that make a funny noise sometimes and my mechanic said it sounded like the heat shield and it was common for Nissans to do this.

Anyone else have this experience?

Is there a way for me to tack-weld it or do something else without spending too much money!

Chucky...

You can take the heat shield off the car. Mine actually was so rusty that one day one side fell off the car and looked like crap! i got under the car and pulled the thing off. I had this same problem on my ford T bird one day way back. You can take it off and sold the problem.

As long as you dont park in high grass or leaves a lot, then you should be fine.

I haven't looked underneath the car yet, but where is the heat shield located? I always thought it was to prevent the heat from comming up to the passenger area.

I'm actually thinking it sounds like its in the transmission area, maybe the flex pipe or something....I guess I'm the first with the problem in a I30.

Mine came off couple of months ago when i went to buy new tires ... i actually went to Midas last week to see if they can hook it back in but the mechanic said that it's fine without the heat shield ... seems they can't put it back in ..

i wondered what if some sharp thing hits the cat. converter !?!

Its funny, my mechanic said, the same thing, that I can just take it off, but I asked him, well, they put it there for a reason, no?

I have to look at it to see if I can do something to stop it from ratteling or if there is just a bolt that I can get replaced. Unless anyone esle have any ideas.

Chucky.

The shields are not meant to protect against puncher, but rather reduce heating of the floor boards due to heat radiation. The shields also help the cat to maintain its high temp which is needed for the exhaust conversion process.

Yeah, I recall mine rattling once. I took it by the dealer and they told me that rocks/gravel can get kicked up in there. It seems to have worked its way out though as it doesn't rattle anymore.

Yeah, a mechanic told me once that they are on there also to help for if you park in high grass or leaves or something. He said it is to prevent the grass from touching the converter and catching on fire. Here is a question I have, if the heat shield is made of metal and covers the converter, which is metal, and the converter is getting hot enought to catch grass on fire, then WONT THE METAL SHIELD GET JUST AS HOT!!!!!!!!!! LOL

I just looked underneath my car when changing my oil, and I can see there are multiple plates, which I think is considered heat shields...starting from the headers, catalic converter, and I think a resonator (not exactly sure.)

So does this mean its time to get a Stillen Y-pipe, b-pipe, etc....uhm, probably not ready to spend that kind of money, but I'm thinking when people do replace that, do they don't bother with the heat shileds?

Chucky.
