tints on the I30
tints on the I30
i finally found a decent place to tint my windows for a decent price (around $220) and i'm planning on getting 5% for the back.
anyway the reason for this thread :
it's illegal to have tints in the front in IL but the place offers them at 50%, 35% and 25%. which one should i choose?
the reason i ask is because sometimes when i look at my windows, they already look a little dark as if lightly tinted but i'm not sure if it's because of my black interior.
any advice?
i want the 35% but i don't want it to appear darker because of the dark interior (and get pulled over x-amount of times).
any pics of 35%-tinted black on black I30s?

Based on you concerns, I would not recommend 35% with black interior. I have 35% with tan interior and would be enough to get a ticket in your case (Philly cops are cool). My bro has 35% with black interior on a black car and it looks significantly darker, more like 25%.
Not sure of the laws in your area or how dark 50% is, but if you are bent on getting it done, I recommend 50% all around. Or you might be able to get away with 50% front and 35% rear but I personally don't like the mix and match look...

Ive got 15% all around and have done extensive driving in CA,NV,UT,and CO without any problems. Lord knows Ive received tickets for everything else, but they never say anything about the tint. Before this car, I had 5% all around and also never had a peoblem.
You know your area best though, so if the cops are @sses about tint where you live Id stick with the 50% (although that would be to light for my taste.
Its not like it's a moving violation if you do get a ticket. You should just get what you want for the car... just understand the consiquences and what you will be responsible for if someone gives you trouble for it.

thanks for the reply.
i have had three friends get pulled over. however, they were driving cars that sort of begged to be pulled over (RX-7, RXS type-S and a lamborghini orange celica) and one of my friends had to park his car and rip his tints off while the cop watched.
technically ANY tints in the front is illegal in illinois but most of the people here get away with a little something up front (that's why they offer the three choices for the front windows).
this is what i'm worried about. would it be better for me to get the same shade all the way around or get the 5% in the back and 35% (or lighter) in the front?
most of my friends that have their windows tinted drive coupes so i don't know how the mix and match would look on a sedan.
maybe 15% in the back and 35% in the front?

If you car is stock looking (no altezzas) and you drive like an average person then you may get away with 35%, but I'm telling you that it does look at bit darker with black interior. Needless to say it looks even darker at night.
Here's an idea.
My friend had a stock ES300 35% tint and got pulled over for it (not sure what he did to alert it). The cop didn't make him take it off on the spot (though I have hear of other people have to do that) but he went home, called me up and we took off the tint and took pictures of the car without the tint. He then went to court and showed pictures of the before and after and case was dropped. No penalty, just time wasted on his part. Knowing this...
It is possible that you take pictures of your car now (without tint) and have it for safe keeping. And should you get pulled over and somehow manage to get to go home without having to take the tint off, then you might be able to make use of the picture you have. But there's the issue of a time stamp on the picture, but I'll leave that up to you...
Should you get pulled over, first thing to do is drop your front windows regardless if it's rain or shine, be nice, and hope to get away with it.

I got 35% with tan interior. I really wish I would have gone darker.
-Get 25% for sides
-5% on the back window
Because later you will regret not having your windows darker and if you want them you have to pay another $200.

Get 20% back and rear and 35 or 50% in front. I had to end up taking off my 20% up front because I kept getting pulled over. Anything more than 20% gets really hard to see at night.
wow i didnt know 50% existed... hehehe... ive got 35 around.. its light and i like it.. also get the sunroof dark.. like limo just dark now i can tilt the sunroof without burning my face and hands under the sun..
I'll be getting tint in the next month or so, these damn leather seats keep burnin my @ss, i kno the rule here is 50 front 35 back, but i'll probably end up gettin 35 all around. I had 20 on my last car and got pulled over any time i tried to speed at all, so i think i'll keep it safe.
i have 23% lumar tint all the way around and now im kickin my self in the a$$ for not having gone darker leagal limit around here is 35% on the fronts but the cops dont really say much, but yea im gunna have mines replaced with somethign darker all the way around.

i'm in jersey and people get pulled over for a lot of things, i just tinted my car, 5% in the back n 35% in the front. of course i tinted it myself so i can basically change whatever percentage i want. -= 0. but 5% in the back is ridiculous at night, seriously, if you were to go 50%, why tint them at all?? i think its just a waste of money
How much reduced visibility in bad weather are you willing to risk?
i think i always just assumed that it's darker from the outside and visible from the inside (is it the same visibility from the outside as it is for the inside?).

I found one problem with that dark of tints
I have 20% on all my windows and i have a 5%(limo tint) for the eyebrow. I found it extremley hard at night to read street signs or even stop lights. Even with 20% tint on the sides and the back its extremley hard to tell at night when im backing up. when im turning i always roll down my windows to see just incase if someone has an old car with not to bright headlights and i cant see them. thats the only problem i found.
well, after reading everyone's advice on the subject (thanks, everyone), i've decided to get 20% in the rear and 35% in the front.
i talked to the tint-guy and even he told me that it wouldn't be wise for me to get limos in the back 'cuz it'll be hard for me to reverse and stuff.
also, he said if i pay $200 in cash, there'll be no tax.
thanks again for the replies; so helpful.
one other question though : someone in another forum mentioned how some places place tints over dot matrixes and they turn out ugly. is this something i should discuss with tint-guy?
also, anyone with 35% tints (especially, ImmaSquashYou), can you tell me what your experiences have been driving at night, bad weather, etc? chicago winters are pretty crazy.

I have 35% all around with tan interior and you are fine in sun, shine, and snow both day and night. It is a good % assuming you can get away with it.
Make sure the tint guy use a whole piece for the rear instead of putting two pieces together.

he already mentioned that they do it one piece (i asked him how long it would take and that was one of the reasons he gave as to why it would take so long).
as far as getting away with 35%, i'm putting stock in the fact that i drive "normally", i don't have any mods on my car and i drive an infiniti (haha, i don't know why but i keep thinking the cop'll think, "well, he's driving an infiniti so he's too classy for me to pull him over").
aren't there more illinois members? i can't ask my friends 'cuz, like i said, they've all been pulled over.

you guys should really tint your own car if you are trying to save some money. its really not that hard. but DEF pay someone for the back rear window, one piece that big is sooooo ard to fit it perfectly plus you need to get realyl expensive tint since it needs to be really thing in order to have good fitment. its usually pretty cheap for the back rear window since for professional tinters its much easier for some unknown reason. i think tis cause of the you have to roll the window up as you go. oh, and its really easy to tint ur windows if you just take them off...-= 0 and as for the sunroof, i dunno if its useful, but i'm about to do that since its free for me...heeh...
i got my tints done today.
i got 35% on the sides and 20% on the rear window.
everyone was right about the black on black; the 35% looks a lot darker.
two bad things though :
1. a lot of the imperfections in my windows (scratches) are a little clearer now and more noticeable.
2. the tint over the dot matrix is all white (looks like i have a bunch of white dots lining the top part of my rear window).

actually, they showed me the imperfections before i drove out 'cuz they were on the exterior and they showed me how the dot matrix would be white also (they had sample cars/their own cars and they all had them).
i read somewhere that some people buy black vinyl and attach it but so far, i can live with it. it's not too big of a deal.
now i just got a get a chance to wash my car; my work schedule is killing me (and my car's looks
)

I got my car tinted saturday. the film is almost fully cured, but a few more glue spots on my side windows. I think the only reason it is takign so long is because itz a been cloudy/overcast here for most of the week. I got 28$% all around, and it is fine for my taste, I would have liked to get darked like i had on my accord(20 all around) but i'd rather not risk it being that dark, it looks dark enough as it is. Pics will be up as soon as the sun comes out. Oh, and i got 5% on my sunroof, which i'm sure is a main reason for it looking darker than it is.
i just did 20 all around and its pretty dark...im really happy with it and i dont know why i didnt do it earlier...i taking the riskof getting pulled over for it but i dont think thats a big problem in my area with all the minorities and their limo tinted Hondas blasting spanish music with thier rice cooking. ill post pics as soon as i can. cost me 200 even
I tinted my 35 all the way around, and it looks nice on the pearl
it's one of the best colors for cars! i've only seen a couple of cars that look bad in white (the '05 mustangs, regular lancers to name a few).anyway, i was wondering if raising the sunshade ruins/scratches the rear tint? i ask 'cuz this girl was asking me what the button was for and i was like, "oh well, it's for the sunsha....", but then thought it'd scratch the tint so i continued, "..nevermind."
also, is it safe to put stickers on tints? like, if i were to buy a maxima.org sticker; i wouldn't put anything retarded like a sticker of calvin from calvin and hobbes peeing :P
