what could the problem be?

Don’t know if it’s a problem, but it sure annoys me. Since I got the car almost 4 months ago, I’ve noticed that around 2000 rpm in 2nd gear a sort of rattling (noise starts coming from the engine. It’s not all the time, I think it happens when I drive for longer periods of time. No shaking of any sort(engine/transmission), just the noise. All I have to do to get it to stop is to let off teh gas pedal and then “floor” the it to the increase the rpm’s to 2500-3000+. The car picks up speed and noise disappears. Transmission shifts fine. While in idling engine sounds good. What could it be?

what should i do, does it sound like I need a new tranny or just some work? it's not a constant problem that appears 100% of the time. last time i went for a drive with my mechanic, he did not hear it. You know how it is, most people don’t hear things that you hear happening in your car..

Back when I had the auto tranny in, I noticed it from time to time. Not very loud got at all. I was the only one who ever noticed it. I just kept the maintenence up on it and I never had any problems.

I would not worry about it. Just keep the maintenence up on the tranny and you should be fine. From what you say it is not very loud.

the whole thing is that if i accelerate hard from a stop, there is no sound. if it's transmission wouldn't be the other way around. the more i push the worse it gets?

it sounds like it might be a headshield or something of some sort. this used to happen to me in my car i just ripped that sucker right off. change ur trans fluid as well just to make sure there is no contaminants in there.

my transmission fluid and filter were changed 3 months ago. What/where is the headshield?

Thanks for replies everyone!

Yes, get under your car and check if any of the heat shields are loose. BTW, the heat shields are along the exhaust system. You will find them on the headers, pre-cats (just under the headers on both cylinder banks), and around the main cat. The best way I can explain them is as metal covers over the components that get really hot (areas I mentioned above).

I've heard of a lot of 5th gens with the same problem. It's nothing that is going to hurt your car, but I'd fix it if you dont want to go insane. Just find any bolts securing them and tighten 'em up.

Thanks i'll look around to see what's up.. but i hear it coming from under the hood, on the right side of the car to be exact. Isn't transmission on the left?

This doesn't sound like a tranny issue to me, but what do I know.

Depending on which "right side" you are refering to (I'm assuming from the inside of the vechicle), it could be the t chain or even one of the pullies.

I recommend laying on top of the engine and have a friend drive around the block while you locate it...

That sounds safe ds! Haha.

Doubt it's the timing chain though. I would really bet on rattling heatshields.

I tried to search but the Search function doesn't work for me.
What transmission should I use on my 98 I30, I just bought the car yesterday and thinking of changing the tranny fluids, does it have a filter, how many quarts needed? thanx

Chech the stickies in the 4th Gen Forum for an auto tranny flush. Should have all the info there.

i'm not sure if my friend will trust me driving, while he's lying on the hood, I wouldn't. plus i would have to be going at least 30, in my second gear. I guess I’ll just have to drive with this thing until it will be too obvious or something will brake.

i30ish,

If you can find the last post I started, I describe what might be the same thing. (To me it sounds like a small chain dragging the ground, under the car.)

Anyway, I don't have time to look it over soon but if you locate the source, do post back or PM me.

Thanks!

Oh man it would be one hell of a sight!

It very well could be rattling heatsheild rather than a larger issue like a t chain... vq is rock solid.

The only reason that I said it could be the tranny is because I had something very similar. For a long time I thought it was valve lash but after I swapped in the manual it stopped. This made me think that it was auto tranny related.

Had a similar problem with my 99 Maxima, but it was most evident on cold mornings. It would do it in any gear at a certain RPM -- around 3000 as I recall -- but not when the car was standing still! The noise was definitely coming from under the hood and sounded tinny, like vibrating sheetmetal. I reduced the noise somewhat by putting a foam rubber sleeve around an A/C hard line that showed signs of hitting my strut tower brace. I think I also found a part that was vibrating between the radiator and grille. Sorry, but it's been awhile.

i had the same problem too. i took it to the dealership and thoses fools said my CO sensor was messed up because i put in an aftermarket airfilter(K&N). he said that caused the rattling noise. it cost me round $400 to repair. I doubt that was the problem cuz the damn thing started rattling again. i hate that noise. very irritating.

Never mess with dealership unless: 1) you have a new car and have warranty 2) you know someone there 3) you need original parts.
Those bastards will sell you anything and everything

I did the same mod to the AC line and my tower brace when it went in a couple of years ago. It stopped that noise easily and the mod is still in place.

The chain-type rattle hasn't gotten worse ...so until I can get up under it with a hammer to the heat shields or have someone put it up in the air and run it, I'll deal with it.

Do keep us posted tho.
