Hi guys
I just bought 17"/7" rims for my 97 i30, can you help me guide what tire size will fit on them also any advice on good tires that are not too expensive. Thank you all in advance.

PS
I already have upgraded my suspension with H&R springs and Tokico shocks.

Go here:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Find a tire size with a fairly close overall diameter to what you were running when stock.

Then go to TireRack and search for tires in that size. Pick a tire, click on the "specs" and make sure that the size you choose meets the specifications of your wheel width. Most tires list an acceptable "rim width" measurement. Make sure you choose a tire that is in spec for a 7" wide wheel.

On a A33 I'd tell you to run 225/50/17. I don't know if that's what A32 guys run though.

Umm, did you check the specs on the tire?

No 235/45/17 should be in spec for a 7" wide wheel. Unless something's changed in the past few years, the minimum width required is 7.5"

Whether you want to take that risk is up to you.

The recommended tire size from tirerack.com for a 17'' X 7" is 235/45. I have run that size on both 7'' and 7.5'' with out any issues.

That cannot be right. TireRack does everything by the book (sometimes to their downfall). Until you find me a 235/45/17 tire whose specs specify that a 7" wide wheel is acceptable to have that tire size mounted I can't believe that's what TireRack would recommend. In fact, they've straight-up told 5th gen folks with OEM 17x7s that they won't condone the usage of 235/45/17 on them as they're not in spec.

I have run that size on both 7'' and 7.5'' with out any issues.
Now, that may be true. And I know lots of other folks have. But I think people should be well aware of the risks. The 235/45/17 tire is not spec'd for use on a 7" wide wheel. It specifies a minimum of 7.5". That 1/2" difference isn't a big deal (most likely), but it also means that the tire manufacturers didn't list 7" as acceptable most likely for certain reasons - ultimately reaching back to liability. In something as important as a tire I think the company making them is going to do everything possible to insure they're not liable in the case of an accident. Hence the recommended/specified wheel widths for certain types of tires.

Again, he may choose to do it, as others have. But I think people should always be aware of the risks, especially if they're not in spec. From there they can make their own decision rather than taking [possibly] erroneous (not speaking to you, specifically, but rather to everyone/everything in general) advice.

FYI:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...e1=yes&place=6

Dunlop recommends at least an 8" wide wheel for that tire.

I bought Yokohama's 215/45/R17 and double checked with the guys at the store if they will fit on 7”. By the way does any one know how much a stock i30 15" rims weighs? Because the rims I bought are suppose to me 15lbs so just wanted to know what I can expect in terms of weight difference and in tern handling of the car. Thanks again for all the advice I really appreciate it.

tirerack.com did recommend 235/45 for a 17'' X 7" that is why I chose that size in the beginning.

I thought 235/50/17 was what Tirerack recommended? If you go on their site, and click 17 inch for the tire section, they list the OEM size and the possible wider size. Unless it's dif for an A32...

It is apparently.

If you go to TireRack, and look at the specs of the tires, it will tell you what rim width range it will accept.

And for the most part, TireRack abides by this too. At least in the case of the A33.

However, I found, that if I plugged in that I had an A32 I30, and wanted to buy tires, it would suggest 235/45/17. That's the closest diameter, but they're not taking into account minimum wheel width. But this kinda makes sense, since the A32 had no OEM 17" wheel, and thus TireRack doesn't have any kind of information on hand about what width the wheel (aftermarket wheel) that person has. Chances are that most folks wouldn't know the measurement if asked either.

But for A33s, since we had the OEM 17" option, it already restricts us from choosing a 235/45/17, or at least from providing it, as the information they have on hand shows that we have a 7" wide 17" wheel.

What's even more interesting, is if you plug in an A32 I30, then go to shop for wheels, and select a 17x7 wheel, sometimes it suggests 235/45/17, and on other 17x7 wheels it sometimes suggests 215/50/17. Very odd.

So, I guess take what TireRack's automated system says with a grain of salt. A good rule of thumb is to check the tire specs regardless and make sure everything's kosher.

both A32 and A33 i30s run 215/55R16 on 16" versions, therefore, you can assume their tire diameters are the same, Id stick with the 225/50/R17s

www.tirerack.com

if you choose your car's model/year and choose the size of your rims, then it'll show recommended size tires for your car.

tire rack already mentioned above, didn't see it.

My stock rim 17/7", stock tires: 225/50/17.

Everyone's just dying to be spoon-fed.

Doesn't anyone READ and do their own RESEARCH anymore?

First of all I'm not asking to be "spoon-fed" by any means. I'm new to these forums and new to this particular model of car. I am not new to modifying cars by any means: http://www.cardomain.com/id/madcam.

Anyways, I am curious if anyone has tried to fit 235/50WR18 tires on 18X7.5 Rims for a 1998 I30. That was my only question, I am unfamiliar with this particular forum and searched the best I could to find an answer to my question.

Asking a question that you can find the answer for yourself is basically asking to be spoon fed.

If you are no stranger to modifying cars, then you should know where you can find the right size tire for your rim. Hell, its actually in this thread... all you have to do is read.

I guess you are the welcome wagon.... If you are a reflection of the way new people are treated on this forum then I'd rather not come back here for help (or lack there of).

Maybe someone else could assist me.

My only question is... WILL I RUB?

Thank you... That simple size reference was very helpful.

I am not the welcome wagon . If you want spoon feeding, then you are in the wrong forum. We don't participate in that bullsh!t around here. We only help those willing to help themselves. It is VERY easy to find out what tire you need for your rim.

I just bought some Bridgestone Turanza LS-Vs for my '02 I35 and the store manager looked up the tire sizes to confirm that they wouldn't rub on the struts. 235 is too wide on the 17" rims. 225/50/R17 is what he recommended and that's what I got. Hope this helps.

Yeah, 225/50/17 is the stock tire size.....

But no, 235s won't rub on the struts anyway. There's enough clearance there. 235/45/17 however is out of spec on a 7" wide wheel...as it's already been said here.
