evap stands for evaporative emmisions, gas fumes can't be let into the atmosphere, they have to be stored and purged into the intake so they can be burned off. Common spot for problems on the 4th gen is under the car, in front of the gas tank, behind the rear door on the drivers side you'll see a little black plastic cover, look above it and make sure there isn't a problem with the hoses first, then get a manual and go from there.

Malfunction is detected when:
A) Improper voltage is detected from the valve by the ECM. Check items: harness, connectors.
B) Canister purge flow is detected during specified driving conditions even when EVAP canister purge volume control valve is completely shut off. Check items: EVAP control system pressure sensor, EVAP canister purge volume control valve (valve is stuck open), EVAP canister purge control valve, hoses (connected incorrectly).
The EVAP canister purge volume control valve is located behind the throttle cables above the intake manifold.
Get the Maxima Chiltons/ Haynes manual. You're gonna need it.
