A/C question
just got my car a few months ago 2001 i30 35k miles and the a/c worked fine. i went on vacation for a month came back and the a/c would blow but the would not get cold. took it to a local shop and they said i needed a new compressor, seal and gasket, expansion valve and drier filter which would come out $900 parts and labor. with the inspection they did a freon recharge and system cleaning and now the a/c works good as new. i dont know anything about a/c's does this estimate legit. I'm stationed on Guam where the shops are known to be dishonest, and its 90 degrees plus everyday so you need a/c here, anybody have expierence in this or suggestions thanks.

i was thinking the same thing, they said there was a seal and gasket was leaking and the compressor was bad, but if the compressor is the main part of the system (plus most expensive) and its no good, then i wouldnt expect my a/c to work so good.

Assuming they recharged it the system using a dyed r134a, you oughta be able to put a blacklight up to the compressor and see the leaks if there's actually any. Otherwise, if it works, why bother fixing it? It might be a tiny leak, so you'll have to weigh between getting it fixed or just recharged every now and then.
