'01 --> '02+ Head unit?
'01 --> '02+ Head unit?
With the number of people who upgrade the head units in their I35s, I've been kicking around the idea of finding one of the OEM I35 HUs for sale and putting it in my '01 I30. It would be nice to have the RDS function as well as the 6CD in-dash changer. From what I understand this is doable without much of an issue since the size is identical and it is wired to be linked to the steering wheel audio buttons. But my I30 has the trunk CD changer...is there any way to make it work with the '02+ head unit? It would be nice to have 12 CDs available at a time. Also, if I got one from an '03 or '04 model that has the Satellite Radio button, could I then get the factory XM kit and have it wired in?

not exactly what you're talking about but is another route you could take.

02+ 6-disc in-dash changer will drop right in. Wiring will simply plug into the rear with no modification.
You will lose the trunk CD changer though. There is no changer hookup on the back of the 02+ HU. If you could get a '03-04 HU that is sat ready it's theoretically possible to hook up the factory XM or Sirius, but I've yet to actually see one of these in real life.

2003 I35 Radio Problem
I have a 2003 with the 6 cd and cassette. Here is my problem. My old OEM radio crapped out on me a couple of months ago. I bought the exact same thing on ebay and installed it today. It is still giving me the same problem as my old radio though. Every time i want to load a cd, it says select cd so i press 1, then after about 5 secs of it saying wait, the screen goes dark and i cannot load anything. then if i press cd, it says push eject, so i do that as well and still nothing it goes dark again, Any ideas? Is there something i have to do to reset the module maybe??? I am so confused as to why it is doing this. The Cd worked fine for the guy i bought it from, but won't work in my car. Please enlighten me with your input, Thanks.

I'd say the problem is still in the HU (that the 2nd HU is bad), but if it worked for the last guy then I don't know what's up.
I agree with Meta - I think your new HU is bad too.
I wanted to swap out my OEM '00 single CD player for an OEM 6-disc changer from an I35. I bought one on eBay, installed it, and it turned out to be defective (it gave some sort of error message - I forget what it was). I ended up returning it. I bought another one and the same thing happened. The guy I bought the second one from gave me a refund and let me keep the bad HU, so I took the money and got it cleaned and repaired. It's worked great ever since. Admittedly, these HUs aren't the greatest in terms of reliability, so it doesn't surprise me to hear you had these problems.
We are now going to be bombarded with posts from people saying that Bose sucks and you should go aftermarket.

Is the failure rate on the I35 HUs higher than that for the older I30 ones? I seem to read a lot of horror stories about the indash CD changer.
Also, the description for the factory XM kit has the following note:
"* Note 2003 I35 Last 6 Digits of Vin# Must Read 112061 or Higher *"
What did they change after this VIN? Can anyone with an '03 or '04 inform me about the differences?

I couldn't tell you on the failure rates. I can only tell you that mine is still working well (though for a couple years I was using an aftermarket unit).
I think they changed the head unit after that VIN#. That's the logical explanation. They had to change the head unit so that it had a SAT button or the like and so it had an input on the rear of the HU.

Color doesn't matter either does it? Looking on car-part.com they seem to list interior color on all the HU listings. I assume I can take an HU from a black or tan interior I35 and put it in my latte interior I30....
Actually, the color does matter. The HUs from I35s with tan interiors have a tan border around them (or at least some of them do). Make sure you get one of the HUs from an I35 with a black interior if you want it to match the trim of your I30, as I believe all of the I30 HUs have gray trim.

The late '03 I35's and the '04 I35's have a prewire that runs to the trunk, which is in turn plugged into the back of the head unit. If you get a factory XM reciever, it is mounted in the trunk, and is plugged into the prewire harness. The following link shows the factory install instructions.
