I30 ECM code check and reset

I searched around but haven't been able to find what I'm looking for. My parents have an Infiniti I30 (I have a '95 Maxima SE) where the check engine light periodically comes on. My hunch is that it is the O2 sensor, as this is what would periodically trip my ECM on the Maxima and cause the engine light to come on. Given that my folks are elderly and don't live next door, they take it to the dealer who charges them $54 to reset it, every few months or so. Ridiculous.

I downloaded the I30 service guide from PhatG20 and I *think* I see that it is located where the Maxima one is (behind the center console). So, I pull off the black plastic protector and see two holes covered by a thick piece of tape. I pull the tape back and I do not see any screws, as I'd see on the Maxima.

Is this ECM only resettable by using a special tool, or can you use a screw driver? I saw some people say Autozone will check it for you and tell you the code information for free--do they reset it as well? Thanks!

Around here the autozone's will only check it but not reset it for you anymore. You failed to mention what year it this I30 is? If it is 96-99 it should have the same screw and procedure as your maxima, if it is a 00-01 than you must use a consult or obdII scanner.

Ah, sorry -- my bad. It's a 2000 model. Bummer, I thought that Nissan/Infiniti would make a dual system where the old "flashing check light" or the OBD scanner could be used. I guess it's a trip to Autozone then. Thanks!

The screw driver method only works on 96-98.

Gary,
Can you tell me exactly what location the "behind the center console" is referring to? For example, I'm pretty sure you're not talking about the arm rest console or the overhead console.

I've looked all over myself on my 97 and I'm pretty sure I'm just not looking in the right place.

It's right next to the gas pedal, just pop off the black plastic cover and you'll see it.
