Removing OEM auto shifter ****

I couldn't quite find this in the FAQ, but how do I remove the automatic OEM shifter on the 2003 I35? I tried turning it with my bare hands counterclockwise and it did not move. Methinks I might have to use a monkey wrench or something. Any tips to offer? Thanks in advance.

Are you replacing yours? If so, I'd be interested to see what the new one looks like. I don't much like the one on my I30.

protect it with a towel and use vise grips.

I believe it is a twist off, since it doesn't have the overdrive button nore the shift release button (I don't know what exactly it is called).
