2000 i30 transmission slipping and dropping resistor

Hi everyone!

So my i30's transmission slips between 1st and 2nd gear and when i'm full throttle in 4th it does disengage 4th but doesn't seem to engage 3rd gear and seems to be stuck around 4k rpm.

I just got back from Aamco with a P0745 code and investigated a bit on the internet and i'm considering replacing the drop resistor. I haven't tested it using a multimeter yet but i have however disconnected it for a couple of minutes, just to test the shifting. It was quick and firm so hopefully it's not an issue with the solenoids themselves, correct me guys if i'm wrong.

The shifting was a bit harsh though so i connected the resistor back since i don't want to ruin the engine mounts and since i believe the resistor is there for a reason :-)

So do you guys think this resistor can be a lead or am i headed to the wrong direction?

Sorry it's a long post, also i'm French so excuse my English.

Thank you in advance for your help, i'm pretty desperate right now and definitely not looking forward to a transmission rebuild!

The resistor is there to prevent harsh shifting, just like you discovered. Since the transmission is not slamming into gears when shifting, the resistor is OK. If you want to, get an ohmmeter and check it.

You should also check the throttle position sensor, it can develop "dead" spots and cause shifting problems.

The shift solenoids inside the transmission are known to be bad in the 2000 cars. The factory sent out a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) about this. If your solenoids are still the originals, it is a very high probability that they have failed.

Here are 2 service bulletins for you to read.

Thank you DennisMik!

I'll keep the throttle position sensor in mind, do you know how i can test it properly?

Unfortunately though, i don't have an ebsco account, any chance you could send me those TSB using a different platform?

Sorry about the EBCO thing. The link was to the document and I thought that would bypass the log in.

The throttle position sensor (TPS) is 2 sensors built into one package. It is tested with a volt/ohmmeter. Here is a link to the service manual for the TPS.

The file named IDX.pdf is the alphabetical index for the manual. You need to look in section EC.

Thanks again DennisMik!

I'll do my homework now, test the throttle position sensor and perhaps order the solenoids and replace them. Too bad they're like $400 but i definitely thing the car is worth a lot more.

I'll let you know how it goes ;-)

Hello again fellow Maxima.org members!

I come back to you because last weekend my car started to behave weirdly when on the highway. Let me explain, i'm going 60mph, at aprox. 3000rpm and mid-throttle. The car behaves normally usually but every now and then it sort of "looses grip" with the wheels and it feels like the gear is disengaged.

Do you guys think this might be due to the solenoids or the throttle position sensor as well?

Actually, let me give you more information about this.

It seems that the engine's revs drop significantly when that symptom happens, any thoughts? Suggestions?
