i30 LCA and CV Joints

Hello everyone

My i30 is absolutely destroying the new tires that I put on it, the shop where I put the tire and aligned the car told me that the alignment was pointless because of the condition of the lower control arms, they said these needed replacement. Has anyone done the replacement on their own? is it difficult and are any special tools required?

Also, when I turn sharply the cv joints are making the cracking sound of dead, is this another DIY or I need a mechanic?

Where can I get the best price for these parts?

Thanks

Julian

LCAs and CV Axles are doable if you are handy and you have a decent set of tools.
Rock Auto has the best prices for parts, and I've done both jobs lately, and you can get both axles and control arms for $200 total. You'll need large sockets (36mm, 27mm, 24mm/22mm) for the large nuts and bolts for both jobs.

Pretty much this. Having a lift helps, though.

If you're referring to the axle nut, using the 36mm, you're a little off. I just finished up this job a couple days ago, and the axle nut is a 32mm. Just to clarify for you guys

Nissan changed the size of the axle nut. Up to and including 99, it was 36mm. Starting in 2000, it changed to 32mm. The thread on the axle has remained the same, so you can use either size nut.

This is a great example of why people should tell us what year car they have.

You can "rent" the big sockets at most auto parts stores. You put a deposit down that is the price of the tool and when you return it, you get the full deposit. In effect, there is no rent for the tool. The store is hoping you don't bring it back.
