P0420 code

Pending Fault

P0420 - Powertrain
Catalyst System Efficiency below threshold (bank 1)

My 2001 i30 is at 128k. Is it time to change the cat? I know these things can be costly, so should I go aftermarket or oem?

Also, I need to pass smog soon, is there anything I can do in the mean time to get the CAT ready for emissions? Right now the CAT is the only thing that is incomplete when I pull the readings.

You can use use aftermarket if you want. But you live in Calif where things are different in regards to working on cats. If you go on the web and look at cats, you find a note saying they cannot ship to Calif. I think that only licensed mechanics are supposed to work on catalytic converters.

That said, the P420 code points to the pre-cat that is built into the exhaust y-pipe, requiring that you replace the complete y-pipe. The Infiniti one is real expensive, something like $900, aftermarket ones are like $250, but that is on-line and you can't buy them. They are something like $100 more at your local parts store.

What you could try is going to a junkyard and getting one from a 2000 or 2001 Infiniti or Maxima. Don't know what they would charge, but I doubt that it would be more than $50 if you are at a pick & pull junkyard. It they remove the part, I'm sure it will be more.

Thank you for the info. The OEM part is ludicrous for the cost.

I'll just do the drive cycle and see how that goes. I'll post what I end up doing. Thanks again.

I did the drive cycle twice. Which was what the instructions stated. And the CAT was complete the second time. Passed smog too.
