Supercharger or Twin Turbo?
Supercharger or Twin Turbo?
Kinda. I'm debating what I want to do car wise. Either supercharge the Maxima, including all the toys (Quaife, NOS, Injectors, AFC, etc) or purchase a early 90's Twin Turbo 300zx? Either way, this would happen next summer.
Supercharge the Maxima
Pros: Sleeper, cheaper, cheaper insurnace, more garage/driveway space.
Cons: FWD, lots of stress on a daily driver (77k and climbing 3k/month)
Twin Turbo 300zx
Pros: Fast, cool, fun!
Cons: Insurnace, more costly, maintenance
Any input? I'm leaning way to the side of the Z right now.
EDIT: Oh, if I get the Z I'm still keeping the Maxima as my daily driver.
Well, let's see:
You had a Maxima.
You bought a Minima.
So a 300ZX (except the 96 year) would be a step up, with build quality like your Maxima had.
I guess you know what way I'm leaning.

If you buy the Z save at least $1500 to replace the turbos. Once they die the motor should be pulled to change them. Also 2 TD05-16Gs aren't cheap either. I say get a S13 or S14 240sx and install a DET. Simular or better performance than a Z32TT at 1/2 the cost.
Since your sig pic is at a track, I assume it would serve dual street/track duty. Neither of your choices are idea. Max=fwd and 300z=heavy/big.
Since you got the $, a newer(abeit slightly heavier) 240sx would be my choice.
I still think an Infiniti M30 w/ a built VG30DET would a real sleeper street/track car. Not the lightest thing but it's bascily a Z car in sedan form. Control arm front suspension/rwd/same Z irs, all the lsd Z rears fit etc....

Whoa I thought the M30's were FWD, I know the J30s are RWD. Your right that would be an awesome sleeper.

uhh a sr swap will not be anywhere close to a Z... I have a 90 TT and my cousin did a s14 swap and I will crush him in every way. If i were you I would say f*ck the maxima and get a 300zx. Once you experience it you can have nothing else.

Hey don't get me wrong, I love the 300ZX; personaly my favaorite auto. But be prepared to invest in it. The Turbos will nearly certainly need replacing and the HICAS 4-wheel steering is incredibly troublesome.
I've just bought a '94 TT and it needs a lot of work to get any where near where she was almost a full decade ago. But that's just the thing, it's almost 10 years old and any car that old will need lots of TLC.
More power to you in whatever you choose. As soon as I get some cash I will make my Z streetworthy. It's not registered, so I hardly drive it; and to be honest I enjoy my 2k2 Max nearly as much. And it doesn't need anything but gas and wax.
Although I give it the mods its wants.

I may be the only one in the thread to do this....but I'm going to sway in the direction of forced induction on the max.
I have come to LOVE having a sleeper...and even though I really like the new 350z...I'm going to supercharge my max instead simply because when you cruise around in a "sports car" everyone EXPECTS you to be fast....and if you're not....you look like a retard. With the max....NO ONE...and I mean...NO ONE expects...and that's what makes it so much fun.
Besides, 300's aren't really the best cars to mod for cheap.....as someone mentioned before...re-building the turbos can get VERY expensive...and you'll still be seeing supra TT tailights 9 times out of 10.

Better yet, how about getting the turbo setup from Nigel?
I don't really like the idea of getting an used turboed car unless it's in excellent condition, if it is, you bet it won't be cheap to get. My friend had a '93 3000GT VR4, he bought it for around $10k. The VR4 had relatively low mileage, around 60k. Good deal huh? Well, he found out he had to replace a lot of stuff. The turbos were one of the problem. He ended up selling back the VR4 because he found out it would cost him an extra $3k-$5k to fix everything. Ouch!

dude swap in the VG30DETT into the S14 and you'll eat 3Zs for lunch... for dinner... for snacks... in between snacks...
12.2 quarter mile without any other mods
but if you dont like the 240
(darned 240 haters) then get the 3Z
but... lemme tell you a lil something from experience... you will get the 3Z TT fix it up a lil bit... then you will end up Supercharging the Maxima... it WILL happen
3Zs are a pain to maintain if you buy the car expect to have turbo problems tranny problems... and if the car was fixed up before you expect to buy a new engine if ya wana fix the car up!

Just because YOU think that a maxima could never be as good as a 300....doesn't mean that everyone else agrees with you.
I personally would take my max over a 300zx ANY DAY....to me...the max is MUCH better for what I want.

However, if you want something cheap & fast, get a Z31T. I picked mine up for $1k, put around $1k in mods and it's running 13's. Granted handling isn't the greatest but put on some custom coilovers, upgrade the turbo & fuel and you'll have a 12 second tight handling car for ~$6k total including the purchase price of the car .. and it's still a Nissan.
This might be off topic , but my mechanic who is doin a lil suminsumin for my maxima.. ok a big suminsumin haha , he said the max could most definately be TT'd.. he tried talking me into letting him do it - i dont want to. he would put turbos below, not up top so you dont have to mod the hood or that stuff, and theyd be small tt's... i say do that.
goodluck and keep the max

...just get your hood customized to fit those badboys and get to work. Twist some pipes, a few bolts here and there and BAM you got your self a VQ30TT
