Worst Gas Mileage

Was just curious what the WORST mileage some of you have shown... I've been playing around in my car (accelerating and speeding on NYS Thruway to get last night's rain off my car.. heheheh) and managed to get it down to 17 for almost the tank. I don't like beating on my new car, but I've gotta have some fun in it.

How low have some of you gotten it down to, when playing around (Racing away from tolls etc..)

I know we have threads that talk about MPG during normal conditions, but I'm curious as to how bad it can get when having fun in it..

from corona to JFK airport and back (8 miles) - on a full tank, did it for 4 days, and i had to fill up. So basically i got about 120 miles off 3/4 of a tank.

It is important to also take into account...

how long a trip is usually made.

Previous threads in this forum have discussed the detrimental effects of short trips on mileage. The car overcomes initial running at lower than optimal temperatures by running richer and using more fuel per mile.

I've never gotten less than 21mpg on a tank of gas. Almost all my driving is freeway at 65-80mph with cruise control on whenever possible. Best gas mileage was a shade over 26mpg on a 500 mile trip through Nevada on Interstate 80 with cruise control set to 80mph.

What everyone fails to mention is that most of the short trips also involve sitting at stop lights and in traffic for a good amount of time. Your car still burns gas, even if it's sitting still.
