Factory exhaust - stainless or steel?

Anyone know if the factory muffler and exhaust on 98 max. is made out of stainless or regular steel?

Stainless is steel

But answering your question, just regular steel ... hence rust after so many years. Plus, if it were stainless, it'd look a lot better (and more expensive).

Yeah I don't think the Calsonic is stainless, many people have had rust problems.

Before people go blasting off Calsonic's mufflers, let me just say that I think their mufflers are very high quality. Just inspect it (if it's not rusted out) and you'd probably agree ... it doesn't look like a cheap coffee can.

And driving habits + weather play a factor in how quickly it rusts. My 0.02

Oh I agree 100%, I'm not saying they're cheap. I definitely don't think that. People must realize that after so many years almost any muffler would rust out. Maybe not a $500+ polished Greddy, but certainly any muffler under $100 would. The Calsonic is somewhere in the middle in terms of quality.

Cyrus, this thread should be retitled Calsonic mufflers, discuss them here!!!

BTW, did you get the pager installed yet? (thread #3 in which I refer to the pager)

I got all the wires run today and the module will be installed and pager programmed tomorrow morning. I promise I'll let you know when it's in. The mounted the small antenna in the bottom center of the windsheild, underneath where the city sticker would be (me likey ). It has been a b*tch to install though , only because I know the guys at the shop are they charging me 2-2.5 hours worth of work ($90+), but it's been in the shop just today for 4+ hours.

woo hooooo .... either post a thread or PM me 'k? I can't wait to find out about the range. I wish you could've done it yourself, such a waste of $$$ to have a shop put it in.

Actually I'm glad I let them put it in (not jsut saying that because it's paid), they did a much more professional job that I could have done. They're mounting it behind the CD reciever int he dash for crying out loud so that nobody can cut the wires. And the antenna wires run behind the dash and are completely concealed. Like I said they do very professional work. Plus if it took them 5+ hours and tons of tech support, it would have taken me way too long.

sgmax I promise I won't spam up your thread anymore but your question has been answered already anyways.

My factory exhaust was pretty rusty when I replaced it at 72,000 miles and under three years age. That's all I can say, pretty dang rusted, looked like crud!

I just assumed (I should learn not to do this) being that my lil ole 91 SE-R with a MSRP of 12K has stainless steel exhaust, that the flagship Maxima would too! But see, never asssume. When will I ever learn...
