Max says I'm thristy..what to do?
yup with normal driving u can get about 50 to 60 miles after the light comes on... i have totally pushed my car to limit and i got it up to about 70 miles after light came on until my car died... but i had fuel in the trunk that is why i tried it...
Re: Max says I'm thristy..what to do?
easy to figure out. run til light comes on, fill her up, the subtract the gallons pumped from how big ur tank is(in manual).

I had just gotten the Max 2 sumers ago and had less than 1000 miles on it when I drove to school in Bloomington. I have no idea what kind of mileage this thing gets on the open road so I see that I have a 1/3 of a tank when I pass a gas station figuring that there will be one soon. Well, this was in Utah on I-70 near Green River where there is a 70 mile stretch where there are no gas stations. Right when I pass the sign that informed me of that the gas light comes on and I start freaking out. There's no cellphone service and there is hardly anyone on the road. I'm coasting downhills and driving like 35mph uphills thinking I'm conserving gas. People that I passed doing 90 are giving me the strangest looks. After driving for 20 miles with the needle on the stopper I emerge from the valley and proceed to the closest gas station and fill up the tank. SURPRISE!
Only 15 galons went in that tank! I could have easily gone another 40 miles. Sorry for the long story, but I think story time was the best part of elementary school.

The real question is how many miles are left once the indicator stops counting down. Mine usually stops counting around 25 miles to empty or so. I drove around 22 miles like that one day before filling up. I put in 17.3 gallons. So in theory, there was about another gallon left in the tank. Problem is the fuel pick up may not have been able to get it all.

The reason I ask this question, is that I am still dealing with crappy gas mileage. I am at 290 miles on this tank and the light just came on.

i'm getting about 290-300 also before the light comes on. i think it's normal. about 21 mpg for me(in the city)

I'm sure most of you know that running your car until empty is not a good idea. The fuel pump is cooled by the gas and may get damaged if you run low on fuel. You risk sucking in debris from the bottom of the tank and temporary air if you take a sharp turn. You may also clog your fuel filter prematurely and it's not fun to change it (it's in the fuel tank). All this can be avoided if you fill up at 1/4 tankful. Long live the Max!
