Does the 4th gen starter go bad EVERY 60k miles?

I replaced my starter at about 61k miles and found out at the time that this is 'normal'.

So now I have about 125k on it and I'm wondering if I should expect the starter to go bad again. It is not showing any signs of failing but I want to be ready if/when it does.

Any comments?

Jim

I don't think you should have anything to worry about. I have a 96 5spd with 94K on it and still have the original starter.

I think the 95's had a weak starter and were prone to early failure.

97 GXE with 92k miles and a 99 SE with 78k miles.

Neither have had starter problems.

Must be a 95-96 thing.

I'm already convinced that it is a known problem that the 95/96 starter dies at around 60k miles although I'm sure there are exceptions.

What I'm wondering is if it goes out EVERY 60k miles.

My 97 had the starter problem, I think the failure rate is higher for the 95-96's though.

My old '95 GLE's starter crapped out at 75K mi. I don't have any problems yet with my '97 SE's, but its only got 55K mi. on it.

The reason is that the 95-96 were 8 tooth starters and were prone to breaking ealier...in 97 they made the switch to a 10 tooth version and now thats all they sell for the 95-96 when you go to replace it,
even at Nissan

Aha! This was the answer I was looking for. So the no longer sell the original 95/96 starters which means I have the new & improved one in my car now.

Mine was $350 installed at the dealer but was covered under the extended warranty so I paid $50 out of pocket.

Autozone one's are lifetime warranty one's and cost $120. I think their is another company that has them cheaper, but I can't remember the name of them.

Going on 155k miles on my 96 GXE, original starter works perfectly (Murphy's law - having said that, I will not be able to start my car next time I need to.) I have an automatic, perhaps it's only the manuals that have the problem (starter is usually attaced to flywheel on manual tranny or flex-plate on auto, right?)

I heard its not too hard at all to replace starter yourself... save the labor charge!

in fact, it's very easy except the one stupid bolt took me 2000 calories and one hour. guess if the starter has been replace before or using a breaker bar, it would be easier.
