Where Can I Get My Knock Sensor Replaced? Dealer Wants $780!

My check engine light came on and the dealer said that it is because of the knock sensor. I told him that I just had the oxygen sensors replaced. He said that the knock sensor is totally different. Anyway I do not have $780 to give them for one stupid sensor. I have been unable to find anyone else to do the work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

WHAT A TOTAL RIP OFF

DAMNIT -- Do I ever hate Nissan dealers...what ****es me off most is that these guys will have tons of awards from Nissan, but, when you call Nissan to complain all they say is "well, they're independant,
take it up with them"...well, than why do you promote them if you can't
defend them!!!

anyhow -- the part itself is about $120 -- brand new -- some dealers charge more, some less...in any regard, if you know what you're doing,
you can do this job in about 15-20 minutes.

SEARCH for Knock Sensor replacement, find some directions and do it
yourself -- OR -- go to an independant mechanic with the instructions
and they should only charge you one hour labor...

...damn dealers....

good luck!

Re: WHAT A TOTAL RIP OFF

Yeah man...dealers are straight crooks. While I had them look at it they also ran off a list of things that I "needed" to get repaired. When he reache the end of the list the total was over $3,000. I don't know if he really thought I was going to fall for that or not. I took it to Pep boys a coiuple of days later and had them check it out. A lot of the stuff the Nissan dealer said I needed was false. What can you do though? We all have to get our rides worked on...so they are in a good position to rip people off repeatedly. It's unfortunate because they would get a lot more business by being honest and providing good service. Not beating people out of their hard earned money.

I'll definitely check on the price of that part. If I can't find another mechanic to put it in for me I WILL have to do it myself. Thanks!

LMAO

$780.00 for a Knock Sensor Replacement? What does that dealer get ya for a 60K service..... $1,200 bucks?

I'd love to see a price list on their service schedule.

RIP OFF CENTRAL!

Go for it!

It took me about an hour, and I had to buy a socket-swivel, but
the feeling of doing yourself is totally worth it!!!

good luck,

You can get a Haynes manual and do the work yourself.

That's the only way you'll know it was done right.

i just replaced mine last week. I ordered it frm brown and brown 1-800 tel#. it only cost me $123 and I replaced it myself. took me about an hour and with lots of cuts on my hand. the problem with my car is its still stalling. Just got a call from the dealer last night they said the air temp sensor is bad(i think thats the one in the airbox) i think that will cost about $70. I'm gonna pickup my car and replace it myself, the dealer wants $220 parts and labor.

I'd also check your MAFS wiring...that was the cause of my stalling...

Where can I get those instructions? I have looked for a Haynes manual, but haven't found one anywhere in my area.

Sorry if I was unclear. But I meant where can I get the instructions other than the Haynes manual? And is the knock sensor the same as the oxygen sensors?

Air temp sensor has nothing to do with the way your car runs. Don't waste your $$ replacing it if your ECU isn't throwing the code for it.

If your dealer is telling you your air temp sensor is whats causing your car to stall, FIND ANOTHER DEALER!

I can almost guarantee you that your MAF sensor is whats causing your stalling problem.

No -- the knock sensor is on the engine itself...If you use the search tool and use my user name and Knock Sensor, you'll get some
pics of where it's located...

good luck!

If done the "proper" way ... taking off the intake manifold...it would take a long time. Still retarded pricing though.

I'll do it for $500!

Do what Lime said, check out the skippynet link. Should take you about 10 or 15 minutes.

It's really easy to replace...takes about 5 minutes...I don't have
any pics, but, if you buy the new one, you can figure it out (that's
what I did)...

Basically, from the driver's side of the radiator, move from the front
of the car toward the firewall...it's there...

A knock sensor code will not cause the check engine light to come on. Try to read the ecu codes yourself. Instructions should be inside the stickies.

Sure it will. Code 0304 does anyway.

Here is a thread where I discuss my own experience replacing the Knock Sensor.

Don't sweat the 15-20 minutes stuff. It took me a good hour.

I am posting some pictures and basic instructions on how to replace the knock sensor. I really would like to have had a few pictures to at least show me where the knock sensor was!

The first pic is an open shot of the engine bay. The knock sensor is in that little valley in the middle of the engine that I have circled in red.

The second picture is a closer look at that little valley that houses the crummy knock sensor! You can see in the valley that I have my small craftsman wratchet wrench in there already. I can't remember what size the bolt is.

This third picture is a really close up of the wrench on the knock sensor bolt. If you look close you can see the knock sensor in there inderneath the wrench. You just remove the bolt holding it on.

More pictures to follow!

This picture clearly shows what the knock sensor looks like after removing it from its cave! Here it is still attached to the knock sensor harness. There is a metal clip that fastens the knock sensor to the harness. Be sure to remove the clip before you try to separate the sensor from the harness!

Here is the little bugger! To replace the sensor, just reverse these directions!

Oh, here is what your arm will look like when you are done! (minus the hair!!)

Re: one more thing....

The dealer was Rosenthal Nissan in Gaithersburg, MD (on route 355). It's funny because I had heard nothing but good things about them previously. But now I know the real deal.

Thanks for the link! After getting all this feedback from the heads on this site I feel confident enough to do it myself. I'll post when I'm done to let everyone know how it went. Thanks for real! You all are going to help me save some serious $$$$$. Hopefully I can return the favor.
