I have a question regarding a check engine light coming on after an ECU upgrade (like a Jim Wolfe or EPRD).

I have a 96 Max and I'm planning on putting on an ECU upgrade, but was told that a check engine light may come on.
Does this occur often with 96 Maxima's or is it very rare?
Why does this occur? What can be done to fix the problem, without changing back to a stock ECU and resetting the check engine light? I thought that 95's and 96's were almost identical cars. Supposedly this isn't a problem with the 95 Maxima. How much of a gain can you really expect from this mod?

Please give me any assistance you can on this matter so I can make an informed and educated decision for this purchase.

Thanks in advance

I have no experience with modifications, and cannot address this question.

My own Maxima is "bone stock". My bias is against making engine mods. Perhaps that's because I am satisfied with the power the engine makes without mods.

OK...but......

Thanks for your reply Daniel, but do you know if there are any differences in engine management between the 95 and the 96 maxima? Are the specifications different on these two cars regarding computerized engine controls and what would make a check engine light come on?

Thanks for your help!!!

According to several contributors to this forum, early '95 Maximas were OBD-1 compliant, and the later '95s were OBD-2 compliant. All '96-up Maximas are OBD-2 compliant. Therefore we can say that some '95s have the same engine controls as the '96s, and some do not. Perhaps that is the reason for the Check Engine problem associated with ECU upgrades on '96 Maximas.
