1 10 ported or 1 12 sealed using JL subs

I currently have a JL 10w3d4 in a ported box with a JL250/1 amp. It sounds really good at low frequencies. But it does not seem to blend in with any mid-bass songs, at times its kind of annoying. If I keep the same sub and go with a sealed box with it hit mid and low frequencies better? I should I just go with a JL 12w34d in a sealed box? I just want to get some of your opinions.
Thanks,

a 12" will give that mid and upper bass you want better than the 10" will. But IMHO the 10" will sound alot cleaner. Try tuning up your rear fill for more mid-bass to compensate what the 10" cant handle.

That makes no sense. Explain to me why a 12 will give you better mid and upper bass? Also explain to me why midrange speakers usually come in 8" or smaller? Could it be because you do not have to move us much air on upper frequencies? I'm curious.

Thanks,
I like the sound of sealed systems better. In general, they're less dependant of box size, sound tighter, and have a slower frequency rolloff, but require more power. Ported systems can sometimes have a large frequency hump, (called one-note bass) but that really depends on how they're designed and built to compliment the driver's parameters. The ported woofer is unloaded below the box resonance frequency, which means it's more easily damaged with high power and low frequencies.

Thanks for you advice guys.
I think I am going to going with 2 tens sealed in a custom made box. I am going to return my JL and go with the Image dynamic IDQs. They do not require as much space to make them sound good. Per JLs website the box for 1 12 is going to be about the same size as 2 10's
