Buying 97 Maxima Soon...Need Opinions

I found a 1997 Maxima at a dealership here....basically it is a V6 engine, power everything, after market CD Player, looks very clean, only one owner according to the dealership (will ask to see if they can have previous owner contact me). Nice dark green color, which is one of my fav. colors

Anyway it has just a bit over 63K miles on it and I can get it for $9900 +tax/license. Is this a good deal?

I looked around...under the hood and all and it looked very clean...only a few things I would ask them to replace (minor stuff like the arms that hold the hood up aren't quite holding it up anymore). The brakes also squeak a little when stopping, I'll probably have them put new ones on.

Any problems with this year that I should know of? Just wanting to cover all the basics. I test drove it, rides nice. Not sure what model it is....SE, GLE or whatever they are. Just looking for a good reliable car for not too much, and I like the looks of the car (and the fact that it has a V6

If you have the VIN number, someone can run a CarFax for you if you already haven't and that will show you some of the history of the car.

Also, a recall was recently issued for 97/98 Max's regarding faulty alternator. Is this a Nissan dealership you found the car at? If it is, ask them to check out the alternator and they'll replace it if they need, since it's a recall, it'll be free.

i think that it is a good price. i payed 7,000 for my 95 max with 105,000 miles on it. the 97 model has alot of new features that the 95-96 does not have. redesinged front, and tail lights, dual air bags and so much more. go to edmunds.com for more info. i think that the 97 model had a bad air compressor... (is that right guys?) i am not sure. but anyway, MAKE SURE YOU DO A CARFAX BEFORE BUYING! i was sorry that i didn't, and i found out later that my was totaled in 1999 by someone. so now i have to take back my baby and get a new max. (NOW I CAN GET A 5spd!) but yea, i am sure he wouild be happy to run a carfax for you. good luck on the purchase.

Thanks It's not a Nissan dealership, but there is one right across the street

I'll grab the VIN number and do a litte closer examination tomorrow, as well as ask about the alternator and the previous owner.

If you need more information about the recall, head over to this thread

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ernator+recall

I wouldn't worry too much about the reliability. The 97 Maxima was rated the most reliable car in its class

More information about there over here

Let us know how everything goes...

I bought my '96 SE for $5,000. It was in an accident and is salvage title, but it is rnning well and kicking my used-to-a-four-cylinder butt! Max is the only way to go.
