Belts...What if I were to...

cut the belt to the AC compressor? I have to change my belts tomorrow, and I was thinking... I've heard that someone (papasmurf) took their AC out to get the extra power associated to not having to run the AC. So would it be harmfull to not turn the AC compressor but leave it on the car?

i thought bruce removed the AC for the weight reduction. if your're not running the AC does it still draw power?

if you're planning on doing this, make sure disable the relay or fuse so that the AC cannot get power even if you forget and hit the button, just in case.

I've heard of by-pass belts being used when the AC is removed

Louie, Bruce removed his A/C mainly for weight reduction. He did experience though a significant power gain by reducing parasistic loss. You'll get a gain in power, mainly because of faster revs.

First off, there is virtually no drag from the A/C pulley when the A/C is off and the A/C clutch is disengaged. Second, when you go WOT, the ECU disengages the clutch anyway.

Don't remove it unless you're building a track-only car.

I would just remove the ac belt at the track. But if you take it off all the time, you will lose all the ac functions. Which is not only cold air but, faster hot air(runs backwards to create heat vs cold air) and defroster function(drys the air when you put the defrost on).

So during the cold/rainy months when you want to defog the windows, you need the dryer function of the ac to defog the windows.

That only matters for the dull, upper-left coast people........

AC compressor and alternator run off of the same belt. If you cut the belt you will have neither.

speed trip-in my car the alternator is ran off of the larger belt.

The compressor only weighs like 30lbs... from the shipping invoice. So I guess he really didn't gain too much power from that. Does anyone feel a power loss when they turn their AC on? I don't thats why I thought its always turning the compressor.

Did you know that with every accessory, 12 hp is lost?? But like Jeff92SE mentioned, don't take any A/C components off or any belts. Is 12 hp worth getting the Max all stinky w/sweat?

Well it was something I was thinking about during these cooler, but not COLD months a head. I just want to see if I can push my car deeper into the 14's. I haven't seen a 14 sec in a few months so, I'm getting desperate.
