In order to remove the struts you don't have to pull the springs. The springs are "part" of the strut. Eventuall once the struts are off the car you will need some spring clamps to pull the springs off of the strut assembly. Make sense?

If I were you I would ask a few mechanics or just let a mechanic do it. If I were going to do it myself I would "Get the compressors for safety..." I understand that the springs on some vehicles have a lot of energy... and when released suddenly, can kill a person...; but i'm not a mechanic so i don't really know. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY???
What do you think???

just to clarify..... in order to remove the spring/ strut assembly you DO NOT need spring compressors, once removed and you want to SEPERATE the spring from the stut then its a better idea to use them, although i prefer not to. i have dropped a few cars without them. just be VERY careful with the strut bolt and removing it!

You can remove the front struts with springs without a spring compressor. I highly recommend you use the spring compressor in order to put the new springs on if you want to ensure the bolts go on straight and you don't want to strip the heads. Overall the front was kind of a b!tch. The rear was very easy, I put the rear of the car on jack stands, then used my 5 ton jack with a towel on it and slightly compressed the rear spring to get the bolt out and then I lowered it to get the spring out, put the new rear spring in, start jacking it up slowly till you get the bolt/hole alignment, BAMM, tighten down. Rears were easy and took 15 minutes a piece with no spring compression tool. Good luck...

If u are removing the whole strut/spring combo then no spring compressors are necessary. I'm assuming u bought real coilovers:spring/strut combo ( from a previous thread). The only time u need to use a spring compressor is when removing the center bolt on the top of the strut perch. That the bolt that holds the spring and mounting hardware to the strut. U can go to any automotive store and buy them for 20 bucks or most stores have a free rental policy ( 20 dollars down and then u get back ur money when u return the tool)
Here are some pics:
Remove the 3 bolts at the top, the center bolt is what holds the spring ( in compression), only remove that bolt if u are remove the spring from the strut and spring compressor is required.

You are back by popular request. You have a lot of friends and supporters on the org and contrary to popular belief, I am not completely unreasonable. Don't do that again and you and I will never have a problem.
I am a project manager by day. I will have to be honest and admit that word, and others like it are part of my lexicon. However, they have no place on the open forums on the org. If you feel a Tourette's moment coming on take it to OT. In fact, you can call me that in OT and probably get away with it.
