I have over 800 miles on my ACT clutch now, and I took it real easy the first 500 miles... I still have lots of clutch chatter though, especially in Reverse. If I raise the RPM's a bit, it's not very noticable, but if I try and start out nice and smooth at a low RPM, I get lot's of chatter On my old 5spd max, I used to be able to slowly let out the clutch and not give it any gas, and the car would move... cant even try it with this one Anyone know when or if this will go away? I got the flywheel resurfaced and used lots of brake cleaner on it before the install. Thanks in advance.

 

Hey Matt, I have over 1300 miles and it still chatters everyonce and awhile. It seems like the clutch just does not want to be slipped. It either grabs all the way or looks like I cant drive. I am hoping it will go away soon enough.

 

 

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's seems worse at times, but not for any specific reason or under a specific situation. Since I did the 5spd conversion I am a little more paranoid I guess.

dont worry guys ive had mine for over a year and eventually it will lower the level of chattering, but still grab like a crackhead.

thats the beatiful thing about an ACT. a year and few months later and i can still rip 3rd like there is no tomorrow. ACT sound investment.

 

my ACT has almost 40K miles on it....it still chatters SLIGHTLY...more when it's humid out.....but it still grabs like when it was brand new....

 

just turn the music up :P

 

I find it difficult to move the Max without putting about 2K minimum rpm on it.

That being said, I drove a buddy's Max with a stock clutch, and there is no comparison. NEVER going back!!!

Mine chatters too.

 

Mine has about 4K on it and it still chatters in reverse. . . It that is the only gear it does it in though I am not too concerned as I am not driving in reverse all that often.

 

I have 10k on mine and it chatter BAD!!
whole front end of the car will bounce somedays
hell somedays going down the interstate at 65 and shift into 5th it will chatter and bounce the front of my car abit.

i love and hate it at the same time.
would i do it again though?

It's just a little unerving when the whole front end of your car shakes, sometimes violently. I don't have much problems except for 1st and reverse, though 2nd and 3rd will chatter occasionally if I let the rpms fall a bit before letting out the clutch.

 

Is there another clutch that engages hard and does not chatter? Maybe JWT? Oh and one that chirps 3rd?

the JWT Stage II chatters too. i've had mine for about 1500 miles now. im planning on doing my motor mounts soon hoping it will eliminate the chatter or minimize it.

 

Oh are your mounts bad? So is there a clutch that is not so "heavy" as a ACT and still grips the same w/ no chatter?

I've had mine for about 4 months and mine chatters every once in while,but it's a very mild chatter not a harsh feel at all. But man do that thing still grab like theres no tomorrow!!!!

 

Hmm... maybe I'll have to do a home poly job on my motor mounts...

 

What is clutch have to do with chatter. When you installed your clutch the mechanik prolly forgot to resurface your flywheele Clutch chatter happens because of worn flywheel. All you had to do was resurface it before intalling a new clutch.

Just like with the brake. When your brakes rattle at high speed you dont blame the brakes but the rotors. Samething here.

 

I had the flywheel resurfaced by a reputable shop before I installed the clutch/5spd swap...

 

I'll have to ask the guys if they did that, and have it done.

 

Very interesting thread. My stock clutch chattered from 0 miles, and when I brought it right back to the dealer they told me that's normal. Then it started making a whirring noise, and 66,000 miles later it's the same. Didn't get any worse, never went away though.

 

Same here. Mine is only 2500 miles since install. 1st gear, I have to rev up to 1800 rpms to minimize the chatter...

 

Well. After reading this thread and coutless others while searching I am getting worried.
I am about to order my ACT clutch. A few questions for you guys with the ACT.

1. Is the chatter bad enough to make you wish you would have stayed stock.

2. I am N/A and plan to stay that way. What real benefit will I get from a 300hp rated clutch, besides being able to chrip 3rd.

3. Does it grap so hard it will make a big difference in launches and 1/4 mile time.

4. Who really regrets this mod?

I am looking at it this way.
When I did my suspension I gave up a little of my nice smooth stock ride. Really bumpy roads are not fun.
Before I lowerd my car I was worried I would regret it. I thought maybe the sacrifice would not be worth it.
I was way wrong. Yes, the ride is a little rougher but I do not regtret my suspension mods at all.
Is the clutch the same way. Do the positive out way the negative.

 

The reason that mine chatters is that it does not want to be slipped. If I let it out faster it is very smooth and seamless, BUT when I try and let it out slowly it chatters.

 

So it's great for aggressive diving and not so much for sitting in traffic and what not.

 

exactly, bumper to bumper traffic kinda sucks but its not horrible by any means. Just annoying sometimes thats all.

 

I'll put it to you this way:

I know I've told you about my experience with the ACT, and I'll give you another perspective. One of the Maxima guys in Ottawa (ReddoG_Max) and I hang out, and he has a stock clutch. I'd been on the ACT for about 2 weeks when I decided to give his ride a spin. Let's put it simple, then break it down: I will NEVER go back to stock.
1. It's a hell of a lot more fun driving with an aggressive clutch - you definitely launch at start up - it pushes you forward.
2. The stock clutch is very nice and smooth, but it's also soft and mushy, whereas you feel the clutch and really get to enjoy the resistance of an ACT. I had a ton of difficulty adjusting back to stock when I drove it. SOOO much travel, although the sweet spot is nice on the Max.
3. It's gonna put up with the abuse you and I and likely everyone here likes to give their clutch once in a while.
4. It looks good on your mod list.
5. Chick dig harder clutches.

Uh, that's about it. Bottom-line: If you want comfortable, easy driving, get stock.
I drive upwards of 700KM/week, and a good portion in rush hour traffic. Yeah, the chattering is a pain, and you can stall it sometimes, but it's worth it. The fun of driving the car is playing with the performance, and this is a great upgrade.

Man, I love my ACT clutch set and once you go ACT you will never want go back. You will see, Let just say, Got Grab!!!

 

Well my chatters really gone down the past few days, I say it might be entirely gone in another two weeks or so...

 

hm, must have missed this thread. actually i was at town east, you probably left before me cuz i didn't see you.

 

i have like 2500 miles on my ACT and still get some crazy chatter but for some reason its only after i have been driving for a little while, not for the first coulple shifts. And i also have to take off atl ike 2k to get it to take off smoothe. The only thing that i wonder about is if anyone has a self adjusting clutch? initially the catch point was on the bottom and now it fluxuates all the time, sometimes midway, sometimes all the way at the top, sometimes all the way at the bottom, im confused. Does the clutch fluid need to be bled? master or slave cylinder bad? And no i dont regret the clutch in anyway, but just tryin to figure out what the hell's goin on.

best part is when i forget i have this nice clutch and shift too quick ending up with not a chirp, but a burnout from 1st to second

 

Yeah we werent there very long and your car was still there when we left.
