Power gains with open headers/open y-pipe? (exhaust cut-out)
Power gains with open headers/open y-pipe? (exhaust cut-out)
Any guesses on what (if any) power gains we would see from running open headers or an open Y? I would think that low end power would suffer due to loss of exhaust gas velocity, but that should not be a problem (see below). Would a dyno shop let you do a run with an open Y-pipe?
I30krab is running an exhaust cut out just after the resonator. But he is boosted and makes no mention of power gains.http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=149465 There are a few other mentions of exhaust cut outs, but no info on power gains. http://forums.maxima.org/search.php?...der=descending
Quick time performance makes an electric exhaust cutout http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/qtec.htm , if you used an RPM switch and only activated it at WOT you could switch it over only at the RPM where an open Y-pipe started to make more power. For track use only of course
If you installed this at the end of the Ypipe would still have two oxygen sensors working, would you get a CEL from not using the third oxygen sensor for a few seconds? Would power gains be enough to justify this mod? Any risk to the engine from doing this?
