Y2kevSE, how is that car ricey? Just because it has an official Boeing 747 Wing doesn't automatically make it rice. Granted, if you slap one of those with 10 NOS stickers and intake and exhaust on a 92 Civic, it'll be rice, but I actually think that car doesn't look half bad. I'm not a fan at all of those huge wings, but it looks alot better on that car than many i've seen.
funny

Y2KSESteve is right. Alot of the domestic guys slap the term RICE on anything that is Japanese and nowaways I see about as many riced out domestic cars as Japanese cars.

My definition of rice has always been useless "performance" items. Like 5" exhaust tips. I guess big double-decker wings fall under that too.
Most people seem to use it now for something they consider to be poor taste, which I think is silly, since it's so relative and has nothing to do with the origin of the word.
This topic is probably beating a dead horse though, right?
I think it is safe to say...
we pretty much all know what the 'far end' definition of rice is (huge wing, crazy graphics, overdone body kits, Altezzas, stickers, etc.) just as we know what ghetto can be (gold/yellow line tires on rims with monster spacers that shoce them out of the wheel well, TV antenna on trunk, curb feelers, wire wheels or wheels with strange weather vane chrome patterns, gold emblem package, mirror tint, ect.). On the flipside totally boring cars can be named for a more 'mature' crowd as well...
just saying that with the obvious cases you just KNOW they are what they are...it is pretty much opinion (as seen in the above posts) as to how far into any direction a car has gone.

Rice to me is:
1) Any car that has modifications intended to make the car look faster but really offer no performance gains at all (or in most cases negative performance). Big honking wings on FWD civics is my favourite example.
2) Cars sporting decals for modifications it doesn't have.
3) Excessive or garish decals/graphics although this is more a personal preference issue. I do like some graphics, it depends on the car and the graphics.
4) If the mods were done just so the owner could brag about the mods, then I call that ricey as well.
Some people feel that putting Asian characters on the car is ricey. To me it depends on whether the owner can tell me what the characters mean. If he can't, then yes, that is hella ricey.

ouch, i can't wait for cheston's response....
I think all of this "rice" talk started when somebody decided to call Japanese cars "rice burners"...specifically, smaller cars. Then, people started modifying their "rice burners" with cosmetic mods and fart-can mufflers. Now, the term "ricey" GENERALLY means any non-performance enhancing modification that is, in the eyes of the viewer, not tasterfull.
It's all opinion, but some examples are
giant wings
fugly body kits
useless lighting
again, all opinion
In my opinion, some 'rice' mods are ok, just as long as you have some bark to back it up.
SprintMax has a good pic from "The Fast and the Furious" sum this up.

Hmm.
If you've seen offical Boeing 747 Supercritical wing, you would understand that the spoiler that i have installed produces down force instead of lift, something rudamentary that you obviously overlooked in your observation.

Rice => extra weight => down force
