Grinding noise at startup

Every 10th startup or so, I hear a combination whining and
grinding noise. The noise lasts 1-2 seconds. Usually, the
car doesn't start until a second attempt, but sometimes it
does fire up even with the noise. Anybody wanna share
similar experience they've had?

My car does that too after sitting overnight in the cold.

From what people have told me, it's a common problem on 95-96 models.
It's the starter motor.

I've been living with it for the past 2 years, since it only happens in the mornings during the winter.

I think I'll get it replaced this years though.

You could probably do a search for 'starter motor' for more info.

I believe a Nissan starter will run you $400-500 depending on where which dealer you go to.

ExpressAutoParts.com has a remanufactured one for $129 + the core deposit of $75. All the autoparts dealers sell remanufactured starters and charge the core deposit it seems.

Core deposit = money they refund you when you send your old starter back to them.

I heard that PepBoys charges $240 installed.

Or you can try the fix on www.motorvate.ca

Best way to go is get a starter for 80 bucks (i'm not sure if it's the rebuilt one or not... either way it wouldn't matter that much anyways) and then install it yourself. Installation of the starter is suppose to be really easy, just requires taking the intake out. I have the original motor.. 140k miles on it... it doesn't start strong anymore... takes about 2-4 turn-overs before the car starts in the morning. btw i'm a '96.
