Anyone ever had a clutch replaced

Hey Maxima Lovers
My Clutch is ****ed and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard a grinding noise coming from the engine when first gear unwinds. I have a 95 SE manual and every time I gear down to first and let off the gas it sounds like my tranny is grinding. I am thinking it is the clutch just being so shot everything is starting to grind. BUt I worry it could be the tranny. If it is the tranny the maxima will have to go. But I would also like to know what a good price for installing the clutch would be. THe dealership wants 540$ SO any help would be appreciated

Uhm... I've always been told that "Brakes are cheaper than a clutch".

You should be able to get the clutch installed for ~$300 at a transmission shop. I wouldn't take it to Ni$$an to get it replaced. Go to a tranny shop where they do nothing but work on transmissions.

i had the same prob. shot bearings in the tranny. take it to a tranny shop, and they will probably rebuild it. while you are in there, get a nice ACT clutch kit .

in my 95 SE when my clutch was fried it was stuck to the floor and it wouldn't come back up...it also made a weird grinding noise in 1st - 2nd shift.

Hey guys thanks for your help but none of this seems to help me. I get a grinding noise when I let the clutch out and compression builds to slow the car down. If it is the bearings in the tranny does anyone know how much that is to rebuild??? I am stumped and if all else fails I am going to go trade it in before it is too late.

Not sure if I misread or misunderstood your post, but if I didn't. . .

You should never, EVER be downshifting into 1st gear. 1st and reverse are two gears that are not designed to be shifted into while the car is in motion. If this is a habit for you, it could have contributed to premature failure of your transmission.

Tranny work ($) will vary by region and the extent of required repairs. Go in person to a couple specialty import transmission shops & get some estimates. Tell them you're doing some financial planning & need to get an idea of what you'll be facing (ie: don't let the 1st shop you visit try to strongarm you into an appointment if u want to get a second or 3rd opinion).

No one can accurately diagnose the extent of the damage over the phone or here on the web. You need to get a qualified technician in the driver's seat.

Good luck.
